Jets-49ers: San Francisco Bullies New York for Second Straight Victory

The Jets winless streak in California continued on Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers dominated New York en route to a 24-14 victory in the Bay Area. The Jets failed to look remotely competitive against the Niners as Shaun Hill led his team to their fifth victory, and first back-to-back wins of 2008.

The contrast between the Jets and 49ers was evident from the opening kickoff. When San Francisco decided to start the game with an onside kick, it was evident that all of the fire, passion, and desire to win was on their sideline.

Failing to make any adjustments, the Jets' secondary was picked apart for all four quarters, continuing their abysmal tradition in an otherwise positive season.

Hill found 10 different receivers and threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns as the Jets' secondary looked helpless and confused.

Brett Favre and his offense failed to establish anything remotely resembling a rhythm, being completely stifled for the entire game.

The 14 points the Jets scored felt more like luck than it did actual football prowess.

No Aggression, No Passion...No Plan?

Losses happen in the NFL—it's something football fans have to deal with.

But it's most troubling when a fan's favorite team doesn't look remotely competitive. When a professional squad takes the field looking flat and unprepared, it makes a loss all the more disheartening.

For the second consecutive week, the Jets looked like they were back at square one, taking the field completely oblivious to their opponents' strengths.

There are plenty of places to look when one wants to figure out why the Jets lost. It can start with the team's flat performance. That's definitely an issue that's counter-productive to winning. 

The defense was steamrolled, and the offense lacked creativity—and that can only come from the top.

Can We Still Talk Playoffs?

It's no secret at this point. The New York Jets need to make a change if they hope to make a splash in the postseason.

With New England's win in Seattle, and Miami's win over Buffalo, the Jets are now in a three-way tie for the AFC East. Fortunately, the Jets' hold the tie-breakers, but it's not a situation fans expected after their five-game streak.

Now in a two-game skid, the Jets are in a situation where they must win. It's no longer about gaining separation as much as it is about staying alive.

Pittsburgh's win over the Cowboys pretty much guarantees the Jets are out of the running for a first-round bye.

Indianapolis' schedule gift-wrapped by the football gods nearly makes them a lock. And the surging Ravens are still threatening for the AFC North.

If the Patriots and Dolphins continue to win, the Jets could be pushed out of the playoffs altogether—a far cry from the All-New York Super Bowl the media was hyping up two weeks ago.
