NFL Trade Deadline: Brandon Lloyd Will Revitalize St. Louis Rams Offense

Tim DanielsOct 19, 2011

The St. Louis Rams have failed to live up to the preseason hype, making them one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL through six weeks. The arrival of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd should help take the offense to the next level and get the Rams back on track.

Yahoo! Sports passed along a quote from Lloyd following the trade in which he talks about the Rams' struggles.

"

WR Brandon Lloyd sure isn't lacking for confidence. That was evident in his comments Monday after the trade that sent him from Denver to St. Louis was completed. He's leaving a 1-4 team for one that hasn't won in five games, yet Lloyd wasn't fazed by that at all. Of the Rams, Lloyd told NFL Network, "I think those younger players are just lacking a little bit of guidance from what I can see on the outside looking in."

Lloyd had a breakout season under Josh McDaniels, the current St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator, last season in Denver. He caught 77 passes for nearly 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns. He only had 15 touchdowns in the previous seven years.

His numbers were lagging this season with a struggling Kyle Orton leading the Broncos offense. He's also a free agent in the upcoming offseason and Denver wanted to get something for the 30-year-old receiver before he walked out the door.

He'll immediately become Sam Bradford's No. 1 target, something the team was missing prior to the trade. That lack of a main weapon has caused Bradford to force throws leading to mistakes.

Even after an 0-5 start, St. Louis could end up with six or seven wins thanks to a schedule that gets easier for the next few months. And Lloyd could very well be the key to that resurgence as he tries to increase his open-market value.

Lloyd will also help Brandon Gibson and Danario Alexander by allowing them to find more open space in the secondary.

McDaniels loves to throw the ball, everybody knows that, but he's been hamstrung by a lack of talent. By moving all of the receivers down one notch, it better represents their ability and should allow Bradford's subpar numbers to drastically improve.

The second-year quarterback shouldn't be judged based purely on statistics, though. If a QB's arsenal isn't capable of getting open, you can't blame the signal-caller for a lack of big numbers. Bradford has a boatload of talent, once the pieces around him improve, so will the numbers.

And Lloyd should be the start of that transition in St. Louis.

The spotlight has vacated the Rams, so they'll surprise some people in the season's second half.
