UFC on Fox: 5 Things New Fans Should Expect to See

Jeffrey McKinneyOct 18, 2011

On Nov. 12, the UFC will be hosting their first UFC on FOX event.

The show will be an hour-long special with UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez defending his title against Junior dos Santos in the only main card fight of the night.

The UFC coming to FOX is huge for the sport of MMA, as it is a major step in making the sport more mainstream.

For many current MMA fans, they already know what to expect from Dana White and the UFC.

For the newer fans of the sport, here are some things you may see at UFC on Fox.

A History Lesson on What MMA Is

1 of 5

While the show is scheduled for an hour, a full championship fight can last 25 minutes if it goes the distance. Add entrances and the time in between rounds, and it could go to about 35-40 minutes.

The other time could be spent on introducing the mainstream audience on what MMA is or give it a brief look at what the UFC has grown to become over the years.

Even if the UFC doesn't put together some kind of video package like this, expect names like Royce Gracie, Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture to get thrown around from UFC commentators Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg.

Celebrities

For years celebrities have been a part of the UFC.

Even as far back as the beginning when NFL Hall of Famer and actor Jim Brown was an announcer at UFC 1, celebrities and other athletes have been seen cage-side.

This gives newer fans a chance to put a recognizable face to something, and even gives them a chance to connect to celebs who've watched the sport for years.

From retired NBA player Shaquille O’neal to actor/martial arts guru Steven Segal, many celebs are big UFC fans.

Blood

Above is a picture of UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin right after he faced Junior dos Santos.

Looks pretty gruesome right? It's not even the worst blood work seen in MMA.

The sport is indeed violent, but it is not bloodlust street fighting. There are rules, regulations and precautions taken to make sure the fighters are as safe as possible.

The slightest elbow, slicing punch or kick can cause a guy to bleed a lot though.

While there have been some awful cuts in MMA, sometimes it can look a lot worst than what it really is.

Although there isn't blood in every MMA fight, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos can do a lot of damage in the striking department.

There will be blood.

Someone Getting Knocked out

4 of 5

Whether it’s in the night’s main card fight or one of the early fights that could be shown, brace yourself for a knockout.

As you see someone lay motionless or getting beat to the point that they can’t defend themselves anymore, understand that it's a part of the sport.

Although it can be hard to watch, the fighters know what they’re getting themselves into.

Not only do the fighters know, the refs (some of the refs at least) and the medical staff around the right are there to protect the fighters.

Unlike boxing where a fighter has a 10-count if they get knocked down, MMA fighters do not get a second chance. Once they are deemed unable to continue, that's it.

While many knockouts can look brutal, usually a fighter can get back to his feet and his senses in a matter of a couple of minutes.

The Most Significant Fight in UFC, If Not MMA History

5 of 5

The UFC having a deal on Fox is major all by itself.

Fans would have been happy just to see a fight like Ben Henderson versus Clay Guida.

But when Dana White announced Cain Velasquez versus Junior dos Santos was going to be the main event, it showed just how much the UFC wants this deal to be a success.

Although this won't be the first time a UFC title is on the line on TV, it will be a first for the UFC heavyweight title.

Velasquez and dos Santos are known for putting on fan-friendly fights. Although both men have other tools besides good striking, White could not have put on a bigger fight than Velasquez versus dos Santos for the first fight on Fox.

Much like Griffin versus Bonner, first fight at the Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale,  this fight will be a milestone moment for the UFC and bring new fans to the sport.
