Carson Palmer: What Does Palmer's Arrival in Oakland Mean for Terrelle Pryor?

Wes ODonnellOct 18, 2011

Carson Palmer is a 31-year-old former No. 1 overall pick and isn't even the starting quarterback for his current team.

The currently "retired" Bengal tried to force his way away from Cincinnati this summer but found his efforts blocked by Bengals owner Mike Brown.

The Bengals ownership and coaching staff remained adamant on not moving the quarterback through the trade deadline today.

That, of course, was before the Oakland Raiders decided to gamble their immediate future on Palmer.

According to Fox's Jay Glazer, the Raiders and Bengals are working a on deal that involves a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional pick:

But the kicker comes courtesy of ESPN's Chris Mortensen:

This now means the Raiders will be without their first, second, third, fourth and seventh-round picks next year.

That fourth-round pick happens to be the supplemental pick they used on former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

So what do the Raiders, who were slated to have no other quarterbacks other than Pryor under contract at the end of this year, do with Pryor now?

Giving up a first-round pick is one thing, but giving up two first-round picks in consecutive years is a franchise-changing move.

Pryor's potential as a quarterback was heavily debated following his departure from Columbus. His jaw-dropping workout and blazing 40-yard dash speed furthered the debate that the 6'5", 233-pounder was better suited to play wide receiver or tight end.

That ends here.

As previously stated, Pryor was going to be the only quarterback on Oakland's roster following this season. His ridiculous athleticism was too much for the Raiders to pass up with a fourth-round pick, but with this deal they actually put him in a better position than any could have expected.

Palmer's contract will have to be restructured to get the Raiders under the salary cap, but his most recent extension has him playing through 2014.

This means the Raiders don't only have a new franchise quarterback, but they also have a guy to groom behind him.

Prior to this deal there was a chance of Pryor moving positions or being prematurely thrust under center. Not anymore.

Expect Pryor to be a developmental QB prospect in the Raiders' system for the next few years.
