College Football Recruiting 2012: BCS Top 25 Teams That Don't Need Top Recruits
Now, recruiting is the lifeblood of every program. But there are the normal juggernauts that really take most of the top recruits and get the best players, and that is a main constant as to why they are always among the top teams.
Then you have other programs that don't necessarily dominate on the trail and have high ranking, sexy recruiting classes, but always still win games and find themselves among the better teams in the country.
Here are a couple teams that are in the BCS top 25 now that don't really need top recruits.
4. Georgia Tech
1 of 4The Yellow Jackets are 22nd in the BCS Standings right now, and it's a remarkable job that they are that high from a recruiting standpoint.
With Paul Johnson running an option offense, no top QBs and WRs really want to go there, and Johnson doesn't really need them. He believes in his system and finds the players that want to come and fit what he wants to do.
Even this year, 3-star DE Francis Kallon and DT Pat Gamble are the top commits for GT, but they'll likely still be contenders in the ACC.
3. Houston
2 of 4Kevin Sumlin has been pretty solid at Houston during his tenure and has the Cougars at No.19 in the first BCS poll.
Personally, if I'm a QB prospect then I'd give Houston a hard look because why not go there, light up some defenses, set records and put up some huge numbers?
Yet, no 5-star recruits really give them a look, and neither do a ton of 4-star players. However, Houston does a good job of recruiting in their talent rich area and coaching their players up in their spread offense and 3-4 defense.
2. Virginia Tech
3 of 4Now, even though the Hokies are inside the top 25 recruiting rankings this year, that is not a normal occurrence for them. But Frank Beamer always has VaTech in contention for an ACC title and BCS bowl.
He does it with great coaching, a great defensive coordinator in Bud Foster and of course, Beamer Ball aka Special Teams play.
VaTech has signed some great talent over the years, but really they don't get a lot of top, high profile players like Alabama, USC, LSU, etc. But they're nonetheless one of the better programs in the country every year.
1. Boise State
4 of 4Now, even Virginia Tech would take their recruiting prowess over Boise State's. I mean, first of all, no 17- or 18-year-old football star really wants to sign up to spend the next four years of his life in Boise, Idaho.
No offense, Boise natives, but even you guys know it to be true. Second, Boise State is not in an AQ/BCS conference.
But Chris Petersen and his staff could care less. They find players that want to come be a Broncom are smart, tough and versatile. Then, they get coached up, developed, win a ton of games and go beat teams like Oklahoma in BCS bowl games.
