Felix Jones Injury: Updates on Cowboys Star's Week 7 Status and Fantasy Value

Josh MartinOct 17, 2011

Another week, another injury for Felix Jones. The Dallas Cowboys running back suffered a high ankle sprain in the first half of a 20-16 loss to the Patriots in New England on Sunday.

This is just the latest blow to Jones' health during the 2011 NFL season. He dislocated his shoulder during the Cowboys' 27-24 overtime win against the 49ers in San Francisco in Week 2.

Felix Jones (ankle) is not expected to play Sunday against St. Louis, which means DeMarco Murray and Tashard Choice will split opportunities to dissect a reeling Rams defense, according to ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins.

The Dallas Cowboys are clearly concerned with Felix Jones' injury because they refused to trade Tashard Choice at the deadline.

"

"Two NFL teams have contacted the Cowboys about a potential trade for running back Tashard Choice, but that's not likely going to happen now considering starting running back Felix Jones is out two to four weeks with a left high ankle sprain, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning on his radio show on 105.3 FM.

'The facts are we have been asked about Tashard Choice by two different teams,' Jerry Jones said on 105.3 FM. 'Anytime anybody calls you, you certainly give it some thought, but with the injury to Felix and where he is with his sprained ankle, that's doubtful that anything will happen there,'" according to Dallas Morning News' Brandon George.

Since Felix Jones could miss up to a month, expect rookie DeMarco Murray to take over as the starting RB, according to Rotoworld's Staff.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, Felix Jones is expected to miss the next two to four weeks with a high-ankle sprain. As such, he'll almost certainly miss Week 7 against the St. Louis Rams and Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles and could return as late as Week 11 at the Washington Redskins.

The news comes as a big blow to the Cowboys' already-mediocre rushing attack, which will likely turn to rookie DeMarco Murray to carry the load. That would make Murray a solid fantasy pickup, as he'll be running against subpar defenses in three of the next four weeks.

Things are not looking good for Felix Jones, who is in a protective walking boot thanks to a high-ankle sprain, according to Dallas Morning News' Brandon George.

Jones seemingly be day-to-day according to head coach Jason Garrett, "'We'll evaluate Felix day to day. Sometimes those (high ankle injuries) are hard to get your arm around initially,' Garrett said. 'It's described as a high ankle sprain, but we don't know the extent of it,'' said Garrett according to George.

I'd expect Jones to sit against the winless Rams.

UPDATE: Monday, Oct. 17 at 2:45 p.m. EDT by Josh Martin

According to an official report on the Cowboys' website, Jones will miss significant time while recovering from his latest setback. ESPN health and injury guru Stephania Bell weighed in with her assessment:

Jones' fantasy value hadn't exactly been anything to write home about before his ankle went bunk. Jones came into Week 6 with just one touchdown and 100-yard rushing game to his credit. He didn't do much to improve on that against the Pats, either, as he managed a mere 14 yards on eight carries before going down.

Jones had been a bit more productive in the passing game, chipping in with 19 yards on two catches. Either way, the fourth-year ball carrier out of Arkansas was hardly a feature fantasy back to begin with.

As for his replacements, team owner/overlord Jerry Jones apparently isn't too hot on Tashard Choice, especially after the mighty-mite runner logged just 30 total yards with a fumble on Sunday, and might be willing to trade him before Tuesday's deadline.

That would leave DeMarco Murray as the the Cowboys' lone rusher. The rookie out of Oklahoma was solid in Foxboro, collecting 32 yards on 10 carries along with a seven-yard pass reception. Even if Choice sticks around, Murray is likely to step in as the first-stringer in Jones' absence.

But don't sell the farm to get Murray just yet. Dallas' ground game has been among the least productive in the NFL this season, averaging a shade under 85 yards per game and accumulating but one touchdown in the process.

Then again, three out of the next four games for the Cowboys are against teams that rank in the bottom-10 in the league in run defense. That's no guarantee of rousing success, but if you can snag Murray on the waiver wire or for minimal cost otherwise, then go right for it.
