BCS Standings 2011: Texas Making the Top 25 Is a Complete Joke
I know that the bottom half of the BCS Top 25 isn’t nearly as important as the top half, but nonetheless, after looking over the first rankings that were released last night, I’m still scratching my head, wondering how a team like Texas even made it in at all.
The 4-2 Longhorns were ranked No. 24 in the first BCS standings, but the ranking comes on the heels of consecutive losses to superior Big 12 teams Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
After their terrible performance in the Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma, it’s hard to really get excited about this Texas team right now, and it’s obvious that they were extremely overrated when they made it up to No. 11 in the polls back in Week 5.
The Longhorns have zero notable wins so far (unless you want to count a sloppy home win over a mediocre-at-best BYU team as notable) and the combined record of the four teams they’ve beaten is just 13-12.
Why are we giving this team so much credit for having “good losses” to two top teams?
You look at other two-loss teams out there like Baylor, Arizona State, Notre Dame and even Virginia, all of which have wins over a ranked team on their resume, and it really makes you wonder how Texas deserves to be in.
If we're giving a team credit for good losses now, then why not put Georgia in the mix? The Bulldogs are 5-2 with their two losses coming to Boise State and South Carolina, two Top 15 teams.
It just doesn’t make much sense to me to see Texas in the Top 25, especially since the Longhorns were such an absolute letdown last season.
Can someone explain to me the formula they are using that allows a team that is not ranked in the AP Poll, the Coaches’ Poll or the Harris Poll to still make it into the BCS rankings?
Are there some type of added bonus points awarded for having your own lousy television network that we don’t know about?
I just don't get it.
