Jim Harbaugh Fight: Why Jim Schwartz's Reaction Was Hot Headed

Matt FaulconerOct 17, 2011

Jim Schwartz needs to hit the ice bath and cool off after his hot-headed reaction following the Detroit Lions' loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Harbaugh appeared to shake Schwartz's hand pretty hard and gave him a pat on the back, which Schwartz didn't appreciate.

He charged after him and confronted him to his face. Tempers flared and the two had to be restrained by members of their respective teams.

This confrontation was avoidable and takes away from what was one of the best games this weekend. Maybe Harbaugh was overreacting to the victory, but Schwartz should brush it off and head to the locker room.

The game was over; there was nothing that Schwartz could say or do to change the outcome of that.

Talk about it afterwards, handle it in private. There is absolutely no need for a head coach to charge after another head coach over a handshake. It was obvious that Harbaugh was simply caught up in the moment of a victory and obviously didn't mean to rub Schwartz the wrong way.

Cooler heads should prevail in moments like this, but unfortunately, they didn't this time. It was a good thing there were enough people around the coaches before things escalated into a bigger situation.

A verbal altercation is one thing, but a physical altercation would have been completely different. Either way you look at it, a fine should be levied on Schwartz for his postgame antics.

There is no place for something like this in football, and Schwartz needs to realize that. He is a very emotional coach, but he needs to learn when to tame those emotions. He looked immature yesterday, and he looked like a sore loser.

Schwartz has shown similar emotion to what Harbaugh displayed yesterday, and no other coach has attempted to start an argument or a fight over such an act.

Being emotional and energetic is one thing, but starting a fight is something else.

Schwartz needs to realize that and be sure it doesn't happen again.
