Jason Campbell Injury: Raiders QB Breaks Collarbone, Who Will Replace Him?

Alex KayOct 17, 2011

Oakland Raiders QB is out indefinitely with a broken collarbone according to Adam Schefter.

Campbell was hit hard on a scramble outside the pocket by Cleveland Browns linebackers Chris Gocong and Scott Fujita near the end of the first half and landed awkwardly on his shoulder as he attempted to go to the ground.

Who could best replace Campbell if the team wants to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002?

The obvious answer is Carson Palmer, but it does not seem likely that Cincinnati Bengals owner Paul Brown is willing to part with his retired QB. The Raiders also do not have second-, third- or fourth-round draft picks this coming year and lack the pieces to get a sweet enough trade done.

This leaves the team in a quandary. Do they continue to trot out Kyle Boller, who has proven time and time again he is not a winner in the NFL? Do they give the job to unproven rookie Terrelle Pryor, who is fresh off a suspension and just made the active roster this week?

I think the best course of action is to pick up a proven veteran who has playoff experience.

This leaves a few different options. The most ridiculous would be pulling the 42-year-old Brett Favre out of retirement and having a constant media circus surrounding the Raiders.

The best fit right now? David Garrard.

Garrard is a similar QB to Campbell because they can both make plays with their feet when all else fails. He also was just released by the Jaguars days before the regular season began.

He would be available for a very reasonable price and would relish the chance to get his career back on track.

The Raiders need to get him worked out today and have him on the roster with a playbook and practicing tomorrow.
