Dan Wheldon Crash Video: Unfortunate Event Again Raises Eyes of Racing Risks
Tragedy has reminded us of why racing can be such a dangerous sport.
Dan Wheldon perished yesterday in a 15-car pileup that saw his car catch on fire and fly up into the catch fence.
Wheldon had to be airlifted out of the stadium, but was unable to survive his injuries.
It was an extremely unfortunate event, and just another in a long line of motorsports deaths. The incident has once again reminded us as to why racing is the most dangerous sport in the world.
It is very rare that someone dies on the football field, the soccer field, or in a hockey rink. However, every NASCAR and IndyCar fan can name at least a couple drivers who have passed based on an accident that occurred on the track.
From Dale Earnhardt to Paul Dana to Blaise Alexander, there have been numerous accidents over the years that stand out in the minds of fans.

With this unfortunate event, we can all see that IndyCar still needs to improve safety at the track. It it obviously impossible to make the track death-free, but IndyCar will continue to make this sport as safe as they possibly can.
Unfortunately, they can only do but so much, so drivers must realize the risks they take when they step out onto the track. Every driver that dreams of making the big-time must realize that there are incredible dangers that come with that.
No one wants to see a driver perish on the track. It's disheartening, disappointing, and extremely sad. The worst part is that there is only so much IndyCar can do. No matter what IndyCar does, there will always be dangers associated with stepping onto the racetrack.
IndyCar will bounce back, but for how long?
