BCS Rankings 2011: Nebraska and 5 Teams Destined for Big Drops

David DanielsOct 16, 2011

The first seven weeks of a college football season means absolutely nothing compared to the final seven.  While the front-half of schedules are loaded with poor teams from non-BCS schools and even D1-AA squads, the home stretch features bitter conference rivalries and plenty of opportunities for top dogs to get knocked off.  Here are five teams that are destined for big drops.

5. Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets finally lost this past week to Virginia, but there will be plenty more where that came from.  Georgia Tech’s next three games are away at Miami and home against No. 7 Clemson and No. 12 Virginia Tech.  They won’t be buzzing after that stretch of games.

4. Auburn

Poor Auburn; they faced three ranked squads already this season and the Tigers still have the two best teams in the country left on their schedule.  This week they’ll play LSU and November 26th, Auburn gets Alabama.  What a schedule to have after you lose a Heisman Trophy winner.

3. South Carolina

If it wasn’t bad enough that the Gamecocks kicked Stephen Garcia off their team and lost Marcus Lattimore for the season; their schedule is brutal too.  South Carolina has games at No. 9 Arkansas and home against Florida and No. 7 Clemson.  In Knoxville, Tennessee will even be tough to beat without Garcia and Lattimore.

2. Nebraska

The one legitimate contender the Cornhuskers have faced thus far in Wisconsin demolished them 48-17.  With games against No. 16 Michigan State, No. 21 Penn State, No. 18 Michigan and Iowa left on the schedule, their one-blemish record will take an even bigger hit.  Their defense is unrecognizable compared to years past and Taylor Martinez needs to do more with his arm for Nebraska to win against better teams.

1. Kansas State

Kansas State has four games in a row that would make an SEC schedule jealous.  The Wildcats will take on No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Texas A&M and No. 24 Texas in four straight weeks.  Can you say ‘death row’?

Here are the current BCS rankings:
