BCS Rankings: Twitter Reacts to the First Bowl Championship Rankings
It's hard to believe it, but we are halfway through the 2011 college football season. And you know what that means.
That's right. It's BCS time. The first rankings for the 2011 season were revealed on ESPN a short time ago, and with them came an early glimpse at what the BCS bowls might look like a couple months from now.
For now, all us here-and-now mortals can do is react to what we have in front of us. And that, my friends, means a trip to the Twitterverse!
Note: Prepare for rampant negativity. We are, after all, talking about the BCS.
John L. Pitts, a sports editor for the Mississippi Daily Journal, points out why some might be surprised that Oklahoma is not No. 1:
Erick Smith of the USA Today reiterates that gripe:
Bryan D. Fischer of CBS Sports has a gripe about the BCS itself:
All of these are good points. The BCS has undergone some changes since its inception, but it is still far from being a perfect system. College football is too exciting to be left to computer calculations and subjective interpretations. The sport deserves better.
However, Ralph D. Russo, an AP college football writer, wants everyone to know that the first BCS rankings don't always end up being entirely accurate:
Meanwhile, ESPN's own college football Twitter feed has the answer to the question on everyone's mind (sorry for the highlighting, but the text was otherwise invisible for some reason):
Perhaps no team is going to have a tougher time proving its worth than Stanford, and many college football fans have noted that this is entirely unfair. For example, here's an amusing tweet from a fan who's not crazy about Stanford's placement at No. 8:
Some who turned in to watch "BCS Countdown" were turned off not by the rankings, but by the personalities talking about the rankings. Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer is not a fan of the addition of Skip Bayless to ESPN's show:
Elsewhere, SI.com's Stewart Mandell didn't want to hear Bayless or Craig James:
Having also listened to Bayless and James, I can't say I disagree with these sentiments. The BCS rankings would be hard enough to deal with if Morgan Freeman was talking about them. Having to listen to guys like Bayless and James makes it even worse.
Oh well. Luckily, we only have about two more months to go before all of this is over.
