TNA Bound for Glory 2011: Angle Beats Roode and What That Means for Impact
On a night when we saw Hulk Hogan come back to the fans that love him, we saw TNA’s favorite son, Bobby Roode, get screwed out of the TNA World Title.
And by doing so, it sent a message to the fans and the brand that things will now get a little more interesting on TNA.
What this means is more feuding, more drama and a challenge to Kurt Angle’s belt.
You could almost see this coming as the match wore on: Roode taking the best of Angle and giving him the best he had for almost 20 minutes. But the more Angle stayed in the match, the more it looked like he might pull out the championship.
What this also means is dissension between Angle, who enlisted the help of Hulk Hogan to turn on Sting, and the Immortal One.
It also means there will be more conflict between Hogan, Angle, Immortal and Eric Bischoff.
The company itself will now be in the hands of Dixie Carter, the storyline states, but all focus will now be on what happens in the aftermath of the biggest night of Roode’s career.
Could the look of self doubt that we saw on his face lead to a heel turn? Roode did well in that position before. Will it lead to more of a feud with Angle or will another member of Immortal, say Gunner, enter the picture?
Gunner and Roode would tear the house down in any arena in the country.
Can Roode get back to the place he was just this past week? What happens with other possible contenders?
Does he get a rematch?
There are so many things to consider right now and while the thought is hot in everyone’s mind, there are several scenarios that could play out.
Remember, there was so much buildup for Bound for Glory that there had to be a wrench in this somewhere.
Roode’s path to the title was hard and full of 11 others who competed, but after his victory in the Bound for Glory Series, he faced his partners in Fortune.
He was victorious. He was ready. He was humble.
And he was set for a big fall, in my eyes.
Like I said earlier in the week, it was too easy for this path.
Roode is like others before him in the business who did not win the world title on their first try. Some, like the man he has been compared to most often, Arn Anderson, never got that opportunity.
Roode needs to carry the TNA brand. Opponents of this move like Hulk Hogan say it needs to be someone like a Jeff Hardy. I walk the middle of the road on this one. Roode is the man to be the next AJ Styles, the next Jeff Jarrett, the next Sting. He is the one everyone bet his or her mortgage on to do this.
Only problem is, like I said, it was too easy for him to win the title this way.
Look at it from another angle: Velvet Sky wins the Knockouts Title. AJ Styles beats Christopher Daniels in the “I Quit Match.” Hulk Hogan turns back to everything that is right and true. Then we see a match that was one of the best I have seen in years and we are ripped at the seams because our hero did not win.
Only in wrestling.
I was hoping this would not be the outcome we got. I thought maybe this would be as “easy” as Mark Henry beating Randy Orton, but creative did not see it fit to make it that way.
Now we sit back, we watch, we see new contenders come out of the woodwork and we hope we can still embrace Bobby Roode as our champion.
Hopefully sometime in the near future.
