MLB Playoffs 2011: Why the World Series Will Come Down to Pitching

Zak SchmollOct 15, 2011

I know that the first thing you are probably thinking is why would I write such an obvious article? Let me try to explain.

No matter which of the four teams remaining meet in the World Series, there are going to be some major bats in those lineups. Think about the matchups. There could very well be the bats of Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman against the bats of Nelson Cruz and the rest of the high-powered Rangers lineup. There could also be the twin terrors of Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder against Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez.

Of course, you could reverse those opponents, but I think that you understand my point. There's going to be a lot of offense in this World Series. Every team that is present has a lot of potential in terms of run production.

Assuming that all of the lineups will produce a high level of offense, the only thing that could possibly differentiate the teams is pitching.

Again, why am I stating the obvious?

It is very easy with these four teams to fall into the trap of thinking that it is all about the offense. Some people might think that in order for the Texas Rangers, for example, to win, they need to score a lot of runs.

This is what I like to disagree with. I'm operating under the assumption that each of these offenses is going to produce a solid amount of runs anyway, just because they have been very productive throughout the season.

Therefore, doesn't it make sense that a pitching staff that is finally able to limit its opponent is going to come out on top and ultimately have the advantage going into the World Series?

It is definitely not easy to limit any of these offenses, but if it can be done, I think that you have an obvious World Series champion.
