Hulk Hogan: Verbal Attack on Tim Tebow Won't Save Wrestler's Fading Career

Tim DanielsOct 15, 2011

Hulk Hogan went on ESPN's SportsNation this week and started taking shots at Denver Broncos newly-anointed starting quarterback Tim Tebow. It was purely a publicity stunt by Hogan, whose been making the rounds to promote Hulk Hogan's Main Event, a new wrestling video game.

Hogan has been working with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling over the past few years after leaving WWE in 2007 due to disagreements with Vince McMahon. While Hogan is still a big draw for TNA, his popularity has begun to fade without the mainstream support.

He's tried to regain that popularity by going after the likes of Tebow and President Barack Obama (via Yahoo!).

'I was a big Obama supporter and kinda, like, believed everything he said he was gonna do,' Hogan said on Fox and Friends. 'But now that nothing's happened...'

Hogan said he was still sore about the president using his theme song, 'I Am a Real American,' when Obama addressed the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner shortly after he released his long form birth certificate earlier this year.

Hogan knows trash talking big names like that will get him back into the national conscious. But it won't last long. In today's 24-hour news cycle, Hogan will once again be relegated to the background before he can finish another promo.

The 58-year-old former icon has dealt with a lot of personal issues over the past handful of years. And due to TNA's second-tier wrestling status, it appears Hogan was been craving the attention he became accustomed to during his peak years.

The best way for him to become relevant again was to go after Tebow, who is no stranger to critics. The second-year quarterback has been in the news a lot lately after Broncos coach John Fox named him the team's starter following their bye week.

Although Hulkamania will never run wild again, you do have to give Hogan credit for knowing how to stir the pot. He knew going after Tebow and Obama would get him the big headlines his video game and TNA (which has an upcoming pay-per-view) needed.

Sadly for the Hulkster, it won't be enough to save his fledgling career. Even a retirement angle wasn't enough to provide a big boost to TNA's ratings, so it's safe to say fans are not drawn in by one of wrestling's all-time greats any longer.

It's been a great run, there's no denying that, but you can sense the end isn't too far off on the horizon.
