Baylor Football: Can QB Robert Griffin III Keep Heisman Hopes Alive vs. A&M?

Randy ChambersOct 15, 2011

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III has been playing out of his mind this season.

Not only has he led the Bears to a surprising 4-1 record and put them in the Top 25, but he has stats that stack up against any quarterback in the country.

Nobody has ever seen a dual-threat quarterback with a completion percentage as high as Griffin's 80.3 percent. That percentage is the highest of any college quarterback this season, and is a solid five percent higher than Brandon Weeden's completion percentage, who is in second place.

Griffin has thrown for 1,520 yards, which is good for 18th in the country. He has also thrown 19 touchdown passes, which is the best in all of college football, and which is two more than Kellen Moore, who is also a Heisman candidate.

Did I mention he has only thrown one interception this season?

The guy has numbers that are off the charts, but unfortunately, he plays for Baylor—and the Bears already have one loss this season. That's all the voters need to snub Griffin from the award, considering many of the other candidates are on undefeated teams that have a shot at a National Championship. Baylor is lucky they're in the Top 25 with a defense that gives up 28 points per game.

Once the Bears lost to Kansas State, Griffin went from a frontrunner for the award to taking a backseat.

But there is one thing that can bail him out—and that's the schedule that the Bears are about to play.

The Bears have only beaten one ranked team this season, and that was against overrated TCU. Well, now they start a brutal Big 12 schedule that includes Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Texas.

If there was ever a schedule to build a Heisman case, that would be it.

This weekend, Baylor plays the Aggies, and although they are a solid team, they give up a ton of points. Texas A&M has given up 82 points in the last two games—so you know that Griffin is licking his chops.

The problem is that Texas A&M scores a ton of points, and Baylor has a brutal defense.

Of course, Griffin is going to put up great numbers, but the Bears have to win. The Heisman trophy isn't going to go to a player from a school that lost five games.

Another team that has a horrible defense is Oklahoma State, who Baylor plays after Texas A&M. The Cowboys also have a Heisman candidate of their own, in quarterback Brandon Weeden. If Griffin can out-duel him and earn the victory, it will raise his stock and knock down Weeden at the same time.

Later in the year, Baylor will face another Heisman candidate in Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones. This will be much harder considering the Sooners actually play defense, but I wouldn't bet against Griffin and his talent. The kid is great.

We all know Griffin has what it takes to win the Heisman—the question is, can Baylor win games to help his case?

These next seven games won't be about Griffin—they will be about the players around him that help him win games.

If they're the ones that can step it up, Griffin will be the Heisman trophy winner.
