BCS Rankings 2011: Why ACC Teams Don't Deserve to Be Ranked in Top 10
ACC football is not what is used to be, and despite having two undefeated teams in No. 8 Clemson (6-0) and No. 12 Georgia Tech (6-0), the conference shouldn't have any teams ranked in the top 10 of the initial 2011 BCS rankings that will be unveiled next Sunday.
Clemson is a quality team, but to be in the top 10 of the BCS you need some real quality wins.
The Tigers' three best wins were against Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech, all of which are overrated.
Each of those schools do not have the football talent they are accustomed to playing with. Florida State's early No. 5 ranking was a bit suspect because we all knew they were not a legitimate elite team.
Also for Clemson, five of its six games have been played at home, where they are extremely tough to beat.
A weak ACC schedule that has been played mostly at home is not good enough to warrant a top-10 BCS ranking.
Georgia Tech's strength of schedule is really bad. The team doesn't play Florida State this season and it doesn't square off against Clemson or Virginia Tech until the last few weeks of the regular season.
You cannot even pick a top win for the Yellow Jackets because every team they've played against is bad. If they were not undefeated at this point in the season, there would be cause for concern at Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets are currently ranked No.12 in the country only because many teams above them in have lost in recent weeks and by default, Georgia Tech has slowly climbed the polls with each win against a cupcake team.
Virginia Tech also isn't the team it usually is. The Hokies' defense, which is normally a strength, isn't playing as well as it should.
The Hokies' No. 19 ranking is not good enough for a school of that caliber, especially one that plays in such a weak conference.
The only ACC team that should be in the top 10 of the BCS rankings at any point in the next few weeks is Clemson, but for the initial rankings on Sunday, no ACC team should be in the top 10.
