Week 6 Fantasy Football Rankings: Tony Romo, Cam Newton and QBs Who Will Rise Up

Josh MartinOct 13, 2011

The 2011 NFL season has indeed been the Year of the Quarterback, with signal callers across the league posting some of the most prolific passing numbers we've yet seen.

And we're not just talking about Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees, either. These three guys will keep themselves in the conversation with big performances against fantasy-friendly defenses in Week 6.

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys

The Romo Coaster will be back in action after the Cowboys' bye in Week 5. The extra rest figures to do wonders for Tony's busted ribs, as does the return of Miles Austin to the starting offense.

The biggest boon for Romo owners, though, is the fact that he'll be throwing against a Patriots defense, which sports as punchless a pass-rush as you'll find in the NFL and has allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks.

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton is only five games into his NFL career, but he's played more than well enough in those five to assert himself as an elite fantasy quarterback.

Granted, he's had the benefit of throwing against some rather porous pass defenses so far, though that isn't about to change when he leads the Panthers into Atlanta on Sunday. The Falcons have allowed 294 passing yards per game, the fifth-most of any team in the NFL. Meanwhile, Newton averages 322 yards per contest through the air, the fourth-most among quarterbacks in the league this season. Newton also happens to be third in the NFL in rushing touchdowns, adding an extra dimension to his already tremendous fantasy value.

All of which points to one distinct outcome—he'll have a big day in Hotlanta this weekend.

Eli Manning, New York Giants

Sunday's Battle of New York between the Giants and the Bills is sure to be a shootout, which bodes well for anyone with Eli Manning on his or her fantasy roster. Manning's three interceptions against Seattle were disconcerting, though his 420 yards and three touchdowns more than made up for those miscues on the stat sheet.

He'll feast on Buffalo's 26th-ranked pass defense, albeit with at least a pick or two thrown in for good measure—the Bills lead the league with 12 picks through the first five games. Even so, Manning will have to take to the air early and often to keep Big Blue in step with the Bills' explosive offense, which should allow him to top 300 yards easily and notch two or three touchdown passes for good measure.
