LSU vs. Tennessee: Tigers Can Win the BCS with Jarrett Lee or Jordan Jefferson

Randy ChambersOct 15, 2011

The LSU Tigers have overcome a lot to get where they're at this season. Everybody knows about them beating four ranked teams in the first six weeks of the season. Three of those impressive wins came on the road.

But what makes their season even more special is the fact that they've overcome all of the off-the-field issues. Especially the one that involved starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson getting involved in a bar fight and suspended for the first month of the season.

This happened just a week before the big game against Oregon, and the Tigers still were still able to put off the distractions and pound the No. 3 team with a score of 40-27. While most teams would have crumbled under the pressure of the big game and having a senior quarterback with little experience lead the way, LSU didn't miss a beat.

That's because it doesn't matter who is under center for this Tigers team. Not taking anything away from the play of Jarrett Lee because he has stepped in and played extremely well. But anybody can step into this offense and lead this team.

Last season, when Jefferson was the starter, he threw the ball 209 times. The offense ran the ball a total of 538 times. Running back Stevan Ridley himself touched the ball 249 times.

So far this season, the Tigers have thrown the ball a total of 133 times. There are 74 quarterbacks in the country that have thrown more pass attempts than that by themselves this season. They've run the ball a total of 247 times this year.

If you haven't figured it out by now, it's that the LSU Tigers are a running team. They pound the ball down the other team's throat and only ask the quarterback to make throws to keep the defense honest and when he absolutely has to.

It's pretty easy to be a running team when you average 183 rushing yards a game and have a two-headed monster in Michael Ford and Spencer Ware.

LSU also relies on its well-known defense, which only gives up 12.5 points per game. It's kind of easy to win ball games when you only have to score two touchdowns, and more times than not, it's good enough for a W.

Neither Jarrett Lee nor Jordan Jefferson are great quarterbacks by any means.

Jefferson completed 57 percent of passes last year and threw more interceptions than touchdowns. Lee's numbers aren't off the charts either, as he's barely a 60 percent completion passer and has 25 career touchdowns to 19 interceptions.

But they don't have to be great for this team to be successful.

LSU may not be sexy and may be boring to watch. They may not have the explosive offenses that Oklahoma State, Wisconsin and Clemson all have, but they win football games and play as a team.

The BCS National Championship trophy is still the same no matter how you won it.
