Michigan QB Denard Robinson: Does He Throw Too Many INTs to Win the Heisman?

Randy ChambersOct 15, 2011

Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson is one of the most exciting players in the entire country. He's one of those players you would pay to see play. Or somebody you can't leave the room until he is off the field because you're afraid you might miss something.

Any time he is on television, you have to either record the game or watch it live.

Robinson headed into this season as a Heisman candidate and why not, he is a quarterback who rushed for a NCAA record of 1,702 yards. He had a ton of hype and for the most part has lived up to that.

But there is one thing that Robinson is not particularly good at, and it's something that he needs to work on. He is extremely turnover-prone and tends to throw a lot of interceptions. The majority of them are bad ones, also, where the throws into double coverage or throws off his back foot.

He is only completing 57 percent of his passes for 1,130 yards and has thrown 10 touchdowns. He has also managed to throw nine interceptions.

That's eight more than Robert Griffin, eight more than Russell Wilson, seven more than Andrew Luck and five more than Kellen Moore. All of them are also strong Heisman candidates.

There has only been two games this season where he hasn't thrown an interception. Twice he has thrown three interceptions in one game, including the Notre Dame game, which almost resulted in a loss.

You can talk about his rushing stats all you want, but the bottom line is Robinson is a quarterback. He is expected to throw the ball well, and the first thing voters are going to look at are his passing numbers.

His interceptions are way too high for him to win the award.

Robinson has led the Wolverines to a surprising 6-0 record but he could very easily have been the reason they almost lost a few of those games.

It's more than just the positive numbers you put up and the record you help your team earn that goes into Heisman voting. How many mistakes you make has to play a factor as well.

If both quarterbacks throw for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns but one has 20 interceptions and the other has six, who are you voting for?

The only way I can see Robinson getting back in the Heisman conversation is if he leads the Wolverines to a undefeated Big Ten title. That would be impressive enough to deserve the award.

Until then, Robinson and his interceptions will cost him any chance of winning the Heisman.
