New York Jets: Rex Ryan Has No Choice but To Consider Jets Super Bowl Bound

Michael DixonOct 13, 2011

Ever since becoming the Head Coach of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan has had his eyes on one game, the Super Bowl.

Apparently, a 2-3 stretch against three teams that will at least be contending for a playoff spot hasn't done anything to change those hopes for 2011.

ESPN's James Walker reported in his AFC West Blog that Ryan still has his eyes on Indianapolis. He backed it up with this quote, that left very little to interpretation.

"I can guarantee you we're going to chase it, that's for sure...Do I think we'll win it? Yeah, absolutely."

At a glance, this would appear to be nothing more than false bravado. But as yourself this: If you were a Jets' fan, or Jets' player, what would you want from Rex Ryan, this?

That didn't exactly work out well for Jim Mora, as he was fired after that season.

Now, if you're going to ask me if I think the Jets will get to and win the Super Bowl? No, I really don't. The AFC is a deep conference with both emerging and established teams. Starting 2-3 isn't exactly a sign that it's over, but it's sure a gigantic step in the wrong direction.

But, the reality of the situation makes no difference here. There is really nothing wrong with what Ryan is saying here.

If it bothered his players, then I am sure that they would have told him that long ago.

And before we are too quick to dismiss this as a possibility, let's remember a few things.

One: The Jets have made the AFC Championship Game in each of Ryan's previous two seasons.

Two: Both years, they were a Wild Card team.

Three: As Ryan said in Walker's blog, they have had at least one three-game losing streak in each of those seasons.

So, while I don't think it will happen for the Jets this year, I wouldn't put too much money on it.
