NFL Picks Week 6: Will Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers Remain Undefeated?

Andrea HangstOct 13, 2011

While making it to 5-0 is no small feat in the NFL, maintaining that undefeated record gets harder and harder every week. Not only do you have a major target on your backs (defeating the undefeated is a great confidence booster), but winning football games is hard work despite how easy a team may make it look.

But in Week 6, the only 5-0 teams in the league, the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, have excellent shots to exit the week with yet another win to their respective totals, with the Packers looking to have the easiest path.

They take on the league's worst team, the 0-4 St. Louis Rams, at home on Sunday afternoon. The Rams have been outscored 46-113 through four games, with a total of 1,240 yards of offense to their opponents' 1,1618.

While the Packers have allowed more yards (1,878), meaning that the Rams have a shot to improve their poor yardage total, Green Bay has a league-leading 173 points this season.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has completed just under 72 percent of his passes—an astonishing feat for this young season—and has a number of talented targets to throw to (12 different players caught his passes in the team's last victory over the Atlanta Falcons). All of this adds up to what is a likely win for the defending Super Bowl champions in Week 6.

A greater challenge awaits the 5-0 Detroit Lions as they host the 4-1 San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco is coming off of a 48-3 domination of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5 and has a great deal of momentum heading into Detroit.

At the same time, however, the Lions boast one of the most explosive offenses and bruising defenses in the league. And considering the impact their fans had on the team's Week 5 Monday night contest against the Chicago Bears, where a combination of defensive pressure and crowd noise forced nine false start penalties.

The Niners also have effective offensive play and an intimidating defense, but neither is as overwhelming as the Lions', which will make all the difference this Sunday. The Niners have a chance to knock Detroit off of their undefeated path, surely, but I don't see them succeeding.

The Lions are one of the league's best for a reason, and though San Francisco has impressed, they won't prove themselves the better team on Sunday. We will exit Week 6 just as we entered it—with two undefeated teams and the question of who could possibly stop them.
