Auburn Football: Win in Cam Newton Investigation Won't Help Tigers Play Better
The Auburn Tigers can safely celebrate their 2010 National Championship again.
This is great news—for last year's team.
Much like the Reggie Bush situation (and completely opposite considering Auburn isn't in trouble) this doesn't affect Cam Newton anymore.
The former Heisman Trophy winner is in the NFL trying to win football games by himself, on a Carolina Panthers team that doesn't want to help him.
As for the Auburn Tigers, they're still trying to find a way to replace him.
Coach Gene Chizik appears to be committed to Barrett Trotter, but that certainly isn't going too well.
The junior quarterback has tossed nine touchdowns, six interceptions and has led the team to a 4-2 record.
The losses aren't all on him. Auburn's defense can't stop anybody and they're lucky to have four wins as it is.
But in the wake of this latest news we cannot get carried away.
The defending national champions won't be defending their title this year, and they stand to lose at least two more games.
Maybe that is why the investigation is such a big deal to fans. This season obviously isn't going the way they'd hoped, but they also knew this was going to happen.
When a player of Newton's stature, along with Nick Fairley's for that matter, comes and goes so quickly, it often leaves the program in trouble.
Fortunately, it is not the type of trouble they cannot dig themselves out of.
Auburn plays Florida this week at Jordan Hare-Stadium. Cam Newton won't be there, but they'll still be talking about him.
That won't help them win the game though.
This program caught some good news this week, but it is up to them to further this news by playing good football. Talking about the best player the school may have ever seen won't do it, they'll have to make it happen on the field.
With this latest news it is time to move on. Cam Newton is now the past; who is the future?
