TNA Bound for Glory: Having Robert Roode Win the Title Can Fix Impact Wrestling

Matthew HemphillOct 13, 2011

There are a lot of things to love and hate about the upcoming TNA Bound for Glory PPV.

On one hand, TNA is still making the same mistakes by hyping fights like Hogan versus Sting, and making it one of the main matches on the card. Jerry Lynn, who is 48, is fighting the slowly aging Rob Van Dam.  It's the company using the same established names to make fights.

On the other hand, the card also has A.J. Styles versus Christopher Daniels, Austin Aries versus Brian Kendrick and best of all, Kurt Angle versus Robert Roode.

Kurt Angle versus Robert Roode is much more than just a wrestling match.  It's a symbol of the two different styles of wrestlers and attitudes that exist in TNA.

On one side is Kurt Angle.  He is a former WWE megastar and an established name.  He is much older than Roode.  He is a man who has done it all, been in every kind of feud possible and is nearing the end of his storied career.

In the other corner is Roode, who is a TNA homegrown talent and the much younger man.  He has had a long career, but at 34, has a bit more left to give.  He also has spent the last few years of his career in a tag team and seems to be ready to emerge as a main event singles wrestler.

It is public knowledge that TNA's Impact Wrestling has had sagging ratings.  Part of it has had to do with nonsensical story lines and heel-face turns that come from nowhere.

Another part has to do with focusing on older talent that has been established in the WWE. Instead of pushing their own wrestlers to the top, TNA has relied on WWE's branded wrestlers.

The fact that TNA has trumpeted matches with Sting, Flair, Hogan and others who are much older and have been around in the business for decades doesn't help either.

In essence, TNA has been changing itself to try to compete with Vince McMahon's wrestling juggernaut, when they should have been trying to keep themselves unique and different.

This Sunday night, they get that chance again.  Robert Roode exemplifies everything that has made up the original TNA.  Kurt Angle portrays the talent and direction the company has been taking recently.

And by the end of the night, fans will get to see if TNA has chosen to keep doing what they have been doing, or if they decide to do what is right for their company.
