Rockies Hitting Rock Bottom?
The Colorado Rockies had a spectacular 2007 World Series run, which made Rockies fans forget about the past ten plus years of miserable baseball. Everyone jumped on the Rockies-express train, hoping for the 2008 season to be just as magical as the “Rocktober” season. Less than half way through the season the Rockies-express train was getting lighter and lighter, making more room for the real fans. The question is, are the Rockies making progress from the less-impressive 2008 season? Or are they going back to the good old Rockies?
It’s not looking good, Rockies are making moves like they did for the past decade, trading away their young powerful all-star hitters. Example, of course, the young powerful hitter from Stillwater, Oklahoma. Matt Holliday has had four solid seasons as the Rockies power hitter, living up the expectations every year, impressing us more and more. Holliday is just getting better and better, so what should the Rockies do with him? Keep him? Make him the next Larry Walker or Todd Helton? Mr. Rocky for the rest of his career? Well that makes too much sense Mr. O’Dowd, lets just get rid of him and make our team younger, since our team isn’t young enough as it is. Let’s just do what we did with Juan Pierre, and trade our best player. It seems to be the trend with these Rockies, that’s why you can’t fall in love with any Rockies player, cause right when you buy that jersey, he’ll be wearing the lovely yellow and green uniform. Don’t even think about purchasing a Garrett Atkins jersey, he may be the next consistent player in purple and grey to go.
The Colorado Rockies need to keep what was working for them, keep the players that are making the fans show up to games and making the girls fall in love with the game of baseball because of a certain stud that wore number five. Pay him the money he wants, he deserves it, and we do have some extra change laying around, for the Holliday plan.
But on a positive note, Huston Street coming over from the Athletics will only bolster their bullpen, along with if the Rockies continue to approach Alan Embree. Ian Stewart has definitely improved from the year before, along with the speedy center fielder from the farm league, Dexter Folwer. The Rockies also announce that former Rockies manager, Don Baylor will be the hitting coach and former Dodgers manager Jim Tracy will be the bench coach. The Rockies are improving their coaching staff and just need to hold on to their current roster and hope to pick up a decent four or fifth starting pitcher. Hopefully the Rockies continue to improve with the young team they have and hold on to the players they brought up from the farm league.
