WWE Vengeance 2004: Top 5 Moments from the Show
WWE Vengeance 2004 was a strange show. It wasn't bad, but it just felt like a standard Raw show I just paid $35 for. Yes, it was a Red Brand exclusive, but it just was not worth the money. Yes, I pay for PPV shows; I do not illegally steal them. Go figure, right?
As always, I will not be mentioning a certain individual, so do not expect to see this show's main event discussed here. From what I remember, it was a really good match but nothing special.
Moving on, let's begin with the fifth best moment from the event...
5. Ric Flair and Eugene Team Up
1 of 5I loved Eugene. He was a great character, and it was exactly what Raw needed at the time. He was a fresh, new, exciting face on Monday nights that the crowd instantly took to.
Sadly, it was destined to be a short lived gimmick. It never was meant to last for years and years, just like the Spirit Squad. His spot here? Teaming with Flair to go for the Tag Team Titles!
There were so many problems with this, but I will only name a few.
1. Flair was a major heel in Evolution. Eugene fooling around with them was ridiculous. There was no need to involve him with one of the best stables in the past decade.
2. La Resistance (their opponents) were heels. Flair was a heel. Eugene was a new face trying to get over. Again, it just a mess to begin with.
3. This was the week Ric Flair's big autobiography hit book stores everywhere. What was he doing on TV each week? How was this legendary figure being portrayed? Yep, acting like a goof with Eugene...
In the end, this was a decent five minute contest that was fun but really a misfire by the company on a lot of levels. Fun fact: The character "Eugene" was actually the idea of Nick Dinsmore, the man who portrayed him on WWE TV.
4. Batista vs. Jericho
2 of 5I remember really enjoying the match over seven years ago.
It was one of the first chances for Batista to prove himself on his own. Yes, he had a few solo matches before on PPV, but none got this much time.
I am sure being in the ring with Chris Jericho helped a lot, but Batista really looked like a million bucks here. Remember, this was months before WWE started to seriously get behind him.
The ending was a little cheap, but Batista was a heel and heel's cheat. Always have. Always will. Great match, lackluster finish.
3. Garrison Cade and the Coach
3 of 5These two were amazing. I have always been a fan of The Coach.
Whether it was being verbally owned by The Rock, kissing up to Eric Bischoff on Raw or even being a manager to Garrison Cade, he was a great character for WWE!
It was the perfect role for Coach. Get over a young guy to the WWE audience and see what happens!
On this night, Coach and Cade lost to Rhyno and Tajiri, but it did not matter. Cade and Coach were on such a great act, and this was one of the few PPV shows to feature them.
2. Great Fan in the Front Row
4 of 5As a WWE fan, sometimes the strangest things catch your attention. Most of us know who "Sign Guy" is. Others can point out funny signs in the crowd each and every show. Some can call out every little mistake Cole, Lawler or JR make on commentary.
On this night, I could not stop watching this one particular fan in the front row. He is on the hard camera side, so you see him throughout the entire night. Years later, he still stands out in my mind. It is a werid memory (I know), but it is my view on the show.
He is wearing a black and white Evolution shirt, and it just seems like the world is coming to an end on every single near fall. It is quite the adventure to follow him during the event.
He especially loses his mind during the Intercontinental title match. Speaking of...
1. Orton vs. Edge for the IC Title
5 of 5This is a hidden gem. Not many people seem to remember this match. Let me tell you, it is worth going back to watch.
Not only does it have the great fan in the front row freaking out, it features two future Hall of Fame performers just about ready to break through to main event status battling for the Intercontinental Championship. Awesome match!
Orton was the reigning champion (seven months), and Edge was eyeing up the gold. While I expected a good bout, these two far surpassed my expectations.
Kudos to both men here! On this July night, they performed at a very high level, and it was very much appreciated. It was easily the best moment from Vengeance 2004...
