BCS Rankings 2011: BCS Doomed to Fail in First Week Standings
It's about that time. One of the nation's favorite past times is to give the BCS a hard time as they fail to bring justice to the college football landscape. When the standings are finally released next week, there will be a great deal to whine about.
It is hardly the BCS's fault. There is so much that can go wrong when assessing the correct barometer of the nation's top teams.
Week 8 is the BCS time to shine. And by shine, I mean become the one thing we take apart with cutting remarks and ways to do it better.
The top of the rankings feature three top teams that all have claims to the throne as No. 1 program in the nation. I could hear arguments on Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama until the cows come home.
Next week, that is exactly what will happen as all three are looking at assured wins in Week 7. Oklahoma and their passing game will trounce Kansas.
Ole Miss is no match for the stout defense of Alabama. The same could be said for Tennessee against LSU.
After Saturday, we will be facing a huge dilemma that BCS will not be able to justly answer in just one week of rankings. We have all been waiting with bated breath for the first week of the BCS standings. But why?
Week 8 will tell us what we already know. The top is enjoying a traffic jam of excellence at the time being. Every last team could land in the title game if it were played today, and I would be happy. I would also be frustrated as one of the marvelous programs is left out in the cold.
Week 8 is going to give us nothing in the way of answers, only more questions. The BCS is good for just one thing, creating a cavalcade of discussion.
The nations top teams will continue to battle for position before the final push of the season. That push is weeks away, making week 8 a fool's errand for pollsters. Only one team can own the top next week, making a great amount of fans mad, and they will be justified in being angry.
