Pacquiao vs Marquez: Would Pacquiao Loss Dissuade Mayweather from Superfight?
Manny Pacquiao is the clear favorite against Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, but there's no denying Marquez has given him trouble in the past.
After battling Pacquiao to a draw in their first bout, Marquez suffered a split-decision loss in March 2008. Nov. 12 will mark the end of their standoff.
Pacquiao knows more than anyone that this bout is huge for Marquez and would propel his name in the annals of boxing history.
Said Pacquiao, via ABS-CBNNews.com:
"“I know that for this fight, he will train hard. Marquez will give everything that he can for this fight. This is a different fight for him, this is the most important fight of his boxing career.”
"
It's hard to imagine Pacquiao losing to Marquez, but it would be interesting to see what Floyd Mayweather Jr. would do if Pacquiao lost.
Boxing fans have been waiting for a Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight for years, grabbing hold of any fight to quench their thirst while they eagerly waited. There are rumbles that a Pacquiao win would set up a matchup as early as next year.
But what happens if Pacquiao loses? Would Mayweather feel compelled to fight the great Filipino? Would he feel as much pressure to defend his honor? Or would he go a different route, realizing he's still undefeated and Pacquiao just hurt his reputation?
We've come all this way and we still don't know if Mayweather intends to fight Pacquiao in the foreseeable future. Is he waiting for the right moment or is he waiting for an excuse?
Then again, maybe a Pacquiao loss would persuade Mayweather to fight him even more, knowing the legend was beginning to recede.
A win by Marquez would surely be a rousing performance to watch, but it's probably best he just loses to Pacquiao so the pressure remains on Mayweather.
Of course, Marquez has no intention of losing whatsoever.
