Tim DanielsOct 11, 2011

Oklahoma State (5-0, 2-0) tries to remain undefeated as it travels south to take on Big 12 rival Texas (4-1, 1-1). The Longhorns are reeling after suffering their first defeat of the season against Oklahoma last week while the Cowboys are coming off a 42-point win over Kansas.

Where: Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas

When: Saturday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m. EDT

Who Might Not Play For Oklahoma State: CB Devin Hedgepeth

The loss of Hedgepeth will hurt the depth of Oklahoma State's secondary. He suffered an Achilles injury and won't return this season. The sophomore cornerback was tied for third on the team with two interceptions and was starting to make a name for himself before going down.

Who Might Not Play for Texas: S Christian Scott

Scott is dealing with a nagging wrist injury and listed as questionable for Saturday's game. The senior safety has made six tackles in the two games he's played. He also has a forced fumble on his 2011 resume.

Key Storyline: Will Texas bounce back after last week's beatdown?

The Longhorns had an opportunity to make a huge splash last weekend vs. Oklahoma, but instead they lost by 38. It will be interesting to see how they respond to that experience. They can either step up and give Oklahoma State a fight or crumble again.

While Texas has a lot of talent on the roster, most of the players are still early in their collegiate careers and need some playing time to become more comfortable—most notably Case McCoy and Malcolm Brown, who will be relied upon heavily in the future.

BCS Implications

If the Cowboys have hopes of remaining in the BCS chase, a win against the Longhorns is a must. Texas is the first of four ranked teams left on Oklahoma State's schedule, including a season finale against No. 3 Oklahoma.

With the first set of BCS rankings set to be released next weekend, getting another marquee win will help bolster the Cowboys' case. With so many undefeated teams left, it's highly unlikely a one-loss team will end up playing for the National Championship. That makes every game a must-win for OK State.

What They're Saying

Jimmie Tramel of Tulsa World wrote an article about how Oklahoma State has been able to be more competitive with teams from Texas, in part due getting recruits from the Lone Star State.

"

Getting over the hump has not been easy, according to coach Mike Gundy, because those schools are located in a recruiting-rich state. Colleges in Texas are stocked with good, home-grown players. And Gundy is a believer that, though coaching can impact outcomes, the team with the best players usually wins.

"

The Associated Press' Jim Vertuno reports that the Longhorns' two-quarterback system will continue in this weekend's Big 12 clash.

"

Texas’ two-headed quarterback attack looks like it will survive for at least another week.

Even after a 55-17 loss to No. 3 Oklahoma in which sophomore Case McCoy and freshman David Ash made critical mistakes, offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said Monday he still thinks the rotation Texas has been using for several weeks can work.

"

Oklahoma State Player to Watch: RB Joseph Randle

Randle has already scored eight touchdowns in five games and is averaging 94 yards per contest. He's also caught 17 passes out of the backfield. It's his dual-threat ability that will get the Texas defense fits on Saturday.

Justin Blackmon gets more attention on the national level, especially now that 2012 NFL mock drafts are starting to come out, but Randle might be just as important to the Cowboys offense. He'll need to keep playing well if Oklahoma State has BCS dreams.

Texas Player to Watch: WR Jaxon Shipley

Shipley has been able to compile good numbers, even with the Texas quarterback position in flux. He's averaging close to 75 yards per game and has three touchdowns. His 25 catches lead the team, which is not too shabby for a freshman.

The younger brother of former Longhorns great Jordan Shipley, Jaxon is quickly making his own name in Austin. He'll need to pull off a couple big catches if Texas wants to defend home turf and pull off the upset.

Key Matchup: Oklahoma State's pass-rush vs. Texas quarterbacks

Neither Texas quarterback has been overly impressive during their oppositions to secure the starting job and Oklahoma State needs to keep the heat on them all afternoon to force mistakes. If it can accomplish that, it should head home with another 'W.'

Longhorns put up a better fight than last week, but Cowboys prevail.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 35, Texas 27
