Tim Tebow: John Fox Made His Decision, Needs To Stick with It

Ryan PhillipsOct 11, 2011

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox has a problem on his hands.

In his first year on the job, Fox has a big-time quarterback controversy to deal with, as Kyle Orton opened the season and looked awful, while fans have been clamoring for Tim Tebow to get a chance under-center. I do not envy Fox right now.

The Broncos have stumbled to a 1-4 start, and Orton has not inspired any confidence in his abilities.

So far this year, Orton has completed 91 passes for 155 yards (58.7 percent) for 979 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. His quarterback rating of 75.7 ranks 28th out of 32 signal-callers who qualify league-wide.

Fox has named Tebow the starter, and now that the decision is made, the Denver quarterback circus needs to end.

The team might as well stick with the 24-year-old for the rest of the season to see what they have in him. If the Florida product proves that he isn't worthy of being a starter in the NFL, then the team can make other arrangements after the season.

In relief of Orton on Sunday, Tebow did lead the Broncos back into the game, but he didn't exactly look good doing it.

He completed four of 10 passes for 79 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. But 28 of those yards came on a screen pass to Knowshon Moreno. Tebow also added 38 yards on six carries, including a 12-yard touchdown run.

Now that Fox has made his decision, the best thing for the franchise would be for Tebow to remain the starter for the rest of the season. A quarterback rotation or a situation where the staff doesn't fully back its quarterback could only lead to more confusion and turmoil for the team.

The Orton era in Denver is now over, and Fox would be wise to see that it stays that way.
