Pros and Cons of the UFC Running 2 Events on the Same Day

Matthew HemphillOct 11, 2011

Whenever anybody is given a large amount of something they love, there comes a point when it gets to be too much.

The more that the UFC grows, the better they are in spreading MMA, and more importantly, their brand.  It also means that there is a chance with every event that they will burn out some fans.

When most of the big fights come from one source with the same packaging each time, it risks becoming monotonous to people.

Though some fans believe that the UFC can continue to grow exponentially without any problems, it is possible that if they put on too many fights a year, it will peak.

Anticipation helps not only pay-per-view buys, but also interest.  When fans are given something easily, it affects their perception of its worth and their excitement for the sport.

It could be helpful to the UFC right now, but it could cause them long-term damage.

Pro: There Are More Fights to Watch

1 of 7

This is about as basic as it gets when it comes to positives.  Fight fans love to watch the matches and the more there are, the better entertained the fans will be.

It also gives fans a chance to see great fights, because the more fights there are, the better chance of fans seeing something explosive.

It would also make watching the fights a full-day event that could involve any number of activities to build up the fights.

It could make the UFC event a lot like Super Bowl Sunday for fight fans.

Con: Too Many Matches Might Lead to Fight Exhaustion

2 of 7

Fans of any sport exude energy when they watch what they love.

They yell, they scream and sometimes they drink alcoholic beverages as well.

This usually exhausts fans and leaves them drained but happy at the end of the night.

Having two events back to back on the same day might be too much.

If the fight card in Japan is as stacked as White says it is, it might lead to fight fans watching and enjoying the fights.

It also might be enough for some of them, which means less pay-per-view buys.

Some might just get tired and turn in early.

Pro: It Will Help Build the UFC's International Exposure

3 of 7

Having two events on in the same day means more exposure on an international level.

There is nothing quite like getting media from Japan and the U.S. talking about different fights and attaching them to the UFC brand.

It helps build up fanbases on a global level and gives the fighting promotion a feeling of not only being international, but being its own sport outside of MMA.

Dana White will also get a chance to answer more questions and field more press than he ever has before in every medium possible.

The fighters themselves will also get a decent amount of exposure for being in such a massive event that changes the face of the sport.

Con: Too Many Fights Will Make It Hard to Pinpoint One Story

4 of 7

Having two events on the same day will have some of the larger media branches and franchises trying to figure out who they should send to which events.

For smaller websites and news sources, it will be a decision on which event to go to.

Dana White will be flooded with questions from all over and for all sorts of different fighters who will be fighting that day.

Not only will it be troublesome for him if he shows too much favor towards one fight card and not the other, but with so many fighters fighting on one day, it will be difficult to give each one equal attention.

Most fighters want to build a fanbase and cultivate the fans' knowledge of who they are so they can sell more merchandise and get bigger paychecks.

With so many fights happening at the same time, it will be difficult to keep the spotlight on themselves.

Pros: It Will Help Make MMA More Popular

5 of 7

Every time the UFC puts on an event, the star of MMA gets a little brighter.

Though the UFC is only one company, in MMA they are the one everyone knows. Whenever they put on an event it is met with media coverage, mixed reviews and positive revenue.

They also create casual fans wherever they go and hold an event.

Having two events in the same day will move the needle when it comes to seeing more casual fans enter the sport, and it could help build up the UFC as one of the biggest sports entities in the world.

Con: There Is Too Much of a Good Thing
