Chelsea vs Everton: 5 Key Battles for the Blues and Toffees at Stamford Bridge

Thomas AtzenhofferOct 13, 2011

Everton come to Stamford Bridge riding a frustrating run of games after defeats to both Manchester City and Liverpool.

David Moyes and the Toffees face another top-five team this week, and his team needs to find a way to score more goals if they are going to have a chance against the bigger clubs.

Fernando Torres is still out for two more games before he can return to the Chelsea lineup after serving the first of his suspension for the Blues' last game against Bolton. Daniel Sturridge should fill in during his absence.

It will be a tough match for Chelsea as Moyes always has a well-prepared team, but Andre Villas-Boas has too strong of an attack for his side to be held off.

Juan Mata vs Leighton Baines

1 of 6

Juan Mata will be pressing the attack all day against Leighton Baines, with the Spanish international is sure to test the Englishman to his full potential.

Mata has been in fine form since moving to England and will be a tough challenge to contain.

Jack Rodwell vs Ashley Cole

2 of 6

Jack Rodwell is off the hook for his red card against Liverpool and he will once again be trying to build some offense for the Toffees on the right.

However, he will be doing so against arguably the best left back in England in Ashley Cole.

Frank Lampard vs Marouane Fellaini

3 of 6

Frank Lampard proved he still had what it takes with a hat trick against Bolton Wanderers two weeks ago.

He is almost certain to retain his place in AVB's side and will most likely lock horns with Everton's Belgian midfielder, Marouane Fellaini.

Both will be trying to solidify their midfield, but Lampard has the edge in his supporting cast.

Tim Cahill vs John Terry

4 of 6

Tim Cahill has to either create the offense or be the offense for Everton against Chelsea.

The Australian is the best player on the team up front and without a true striker to really play off of, he is having to do a lot more on his own without Mikel Arteta.

John Terry will battle it out against a fellow veteran of the league and will do his best to hold Cahill in check at the back.

Daniel Sturridge vs Phil Jagielka

5 of 6

Daniel Sturridge will have a tough test against veteran defender Phil Jagielka.

However, the young forward has shown much promise this season and should be a worthy man for the task.

Conclusion

6 of 6

Andre Villas-Boas will take on a very worthy tactician in David Moyes. Even if the Toffees do not have the same amount of high-priced talent, they always come to play.

Chelsea will have a fight on their hands all night long, but should overcome Everton in what could be a great game.
