College Football Rankings:Notre Dame and Three Teams That Should Be in AP Poll

T.J. McaloonOct 10, 2011

There are teams that made the recent Associated Press Poll that has to make even their fan base go, “Wow we are still ranked?”

Texas A&M, Texas and Auburn are three teams in particular to this thinking. After a week of poor play the AP Poll should have dropped these teams for deserving teams with winning streaks.

Instead, the press who vote in this poll, decided differently, ranking Texas No. 22, Texas A&M No. 21 and Auburn No. 24, despite their two losses on the season.

Two teams have two losses that are more deserving of being ranked than the prior teams mentioned. However, even more deserving, is a one-loss Pac-12 team that absolutely should be ahead of Texas A&M and Auburn.

Have you figured out yet, who these three teams are?

If not, you’re about to find out who should replace Texas, Texas A&M and Auburn in the Associated Press Top 25.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-2 Overall)

The Irish may be being punished for their high ranking in the preseason. Before the year, the Irish ranked No. 16 because of their stellar play at the conclusion of the ’10 season. But, a loss against South Florida in Week 1, has dropped them completely out of the rankings.

Now, after four straight wins they are still under the “Others Receiving Votes” section of the AP Poll.

The Irish are off this week, but have USC the following week. A win against the Trojans has to put a 5-2 Irish team among the top 25 teams in the country.

Georgia Bulldogs (4-2 Overall, 3-1 SEC)

The Bulldogs are a lot like the Irish this year. Both teams started out in the Top 15 of the AP Poll, as the Bulldogs came into the season ranked No.19. Both teams fell out of the AP Poll after a Week 1 loss, as the Bulldogs lost to Boise State. And both teams are on winning streaks of four games, as the Bulldogs have three of their four wins in their conference.

But, for some reason the voters still will not vote for UGA to get back into the polls.

A win this week for Georgia vs. Vanderbilt should gain them enough votes to crack the Top 25.

Washington Huskies (4-1 Overall, 2-0 Pac-12)

Washington is the surprise team that may ruin potential championship seasons for Oregon and Stanford. On the year, the Huskies have feasted on games against teams with lesser talent.

Their only loss on the season has come against a No.11 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 51-38.

But, they are 2-0 in the conference, winning games against California and at Utah. Their next game is against a 1-5 Colorado team, which should result in a win for Washington.

All of these teams have winning streaks that should be rewarded with rankings in this poll. Hopefully, the voters will recognize this, and place them where they belong in next week’s rankings.
