College Football Realignment: Big East Gets Desperate with Interest in Boise St.
Why not?
That's what the Big East is thinking with their latest decision to pursue Boise State as a potential school to join their conference.
Boise State isn't even in eastern Idaho, let alone the eastern part of the United States. Yet when their contract runs out in 2013, they want to be apart of the Big East.
The catch is that only the football team would be in the conference. Boise would have to figure out a way to find a league that brings them on for all of the other sports that make up the school.
The big thing to take away from this development is the urgency shown by the big wigs in the Big East. They are willing to completely ignore the name of their conference and grab a team that is even too far west for the Big 12. With the departure of Syracuse and Pittsburgh, the Big East had to do something and this is the best plan they could come up with.
In other words, it's beginning to look like the Big East is going to go under some drastic changes in the next few years.
Both Navy and Air Force are also on the Big East radar and are potential "plan Bs" in case Boise decides to join a different league.
New Jersey Star Ledger reporter Tom Luicci paints an interesting scenario to keep the conference
"If Air Force, Boise and Navy do join is for the Big East to then add two schools for all-sports (from a group that includes Central Florida, Temple and East Carolina) and then push Villanova to eventually make the move to the FBS level.
That would get the Big East to 12 schools in football and 16 in basketball.
"
This scenario makes a lot of sense and it would likely keep a automatic BCS bid in the Big East.
The big issue I have with all of this is the extreme disadvantage Boise would have right away. Constantly flying across the country is not only costly for the school, but it can be draining on the players. Doing it for half of the season would have a big effect on the players, especially when they have to play those noon eastern starts.
But for the sake of money, that's an issue to worry about later because that's the way college football is run these days.
Put yourself in a position to make as much money as possible and worry about the ramifications later.
Can Boise State make us money? Then bring them in! Who cares if they ruin the geographic integrity of the conference.
