UFC 136 Results: Ranking The Top 10 Lightweights in the UFC

Tim McTiernanOct 9, 2011

Saturday night, Frankie Edgar finally put an end to "The Bully" as he was able to TKO Gray Maynard in the fourth round and successfully defend his lightweight championship.

Gray Maynard was clearly the No. 2 lightweight going into the fight, but where does he stand after the loss?

In addition to the lightweight title fight, Melvin Guillard and Joe Lauzon were facing off in a bout with some major title implications.

Where do they stand now?

Where do Clay Guida and Ben Henderson fit into all this?

Check out the updated top 10 rankings.

10) Donald Cerrone

1 of 10

Now that we're seeing more of the top WEC lightweights, it's easier to figure out where they stand in the whole grand scheme of things.

Cerrone was one of the best in the WEC, and that's no different in the UFC.

Cerrone has fought three times so far in the UFC and has come out successful in all of them with one TKO, one submission and one decision.

He fights again at UFC 137 when he takes on Dennis Siver.

Cerrone has notable victories over Charles Oliveira, Paul Kelly, Jamie Varner and Anthony Njokuani.

9) Dennis Siver

2 of 10

Dennis Siver was last seen at UFC 132 where he won a controversial unanimous decision over Matt Wiman.

Including that fight, Siver is currently on a four-fight winning streak and is a winner of eight of his past nine fights.

Siver has some of the best striking in the lightweight division, and he'll get a chance to show that off when he takes on Donald Cerrone at UFC 137.

Siver has notable victories over Matt Wiman, George Sotiropoulos, Spencer Fisher and Paul Kelly.

8) Melvin Guillard

3 of 10

Melvin Guillard got knocked way down the rankings after his 47-second submission loss to Joe Lauzon.

Coming into the fight, Guillard was likely one or two fights away from a title shot, but Lauzon ended that hype in outstanding fashion.

Guillard is still one of the most talented and dangerous fighters in the lightweight division, but he has to start his climb back up.

Guillard has notable victories over Shane Roller, Evan Dunham, Gleison Tibau and Dennis Siver.

7) Joe Lauzon

4 of 10

Melvin Guillard falls way down, and Joe Lauzon shoots way up.

Lauzon submitted Guillard in a mere 47 seconds, and in the process, got his name in the mix for a shot at the lightweight title.

Lauzon is 5-2 in his past seven, but he has been a bit inconsistent, never stringing together more than two wins.

Perhaps his win last night could be the start of a title run, but at 27 years of age, Lauzon still has a lot of time.

Lauzon has notable victories over Melvin Guillard, Gabe Ruediger, Jeremy Stephens, Brandon Melendez, Jens Pulver and Mike Brown.

6) Anthony Pettis

5 of 10

Like I said, now that we've seen the WEC guys, we can start to figure out where they fit in.

Pettis has two losses in his career, the most recent of which came to Clay Guida, who is currently in the running for a No. 1 contender spot.

On Saturday night, Pettis wanted to showcase his wrestling, and he did that en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Pettis has notable victories over Jeremy Stephens, Ben Henderson and Shane Roller.

5) Jim Miller

6 of 10

Jim Miller, even after his loss to Henderson, is still one of the top lightweights in MMA today.

Miller is 20-3 in his career, and his only losses have come to Ben Henderson, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

It can't be argued that he's an elite lightweight.

Jim hasn't fought since his loss to Henderson, but something should be announced soon. Maybe a fight against Maynard is in the cards.

Miller has notable victories over Charles Oliveira, Gleison Tibau, Mark Bocek, Duane Ludwig, Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman.

4) Ben Henderson

7 of 10

Ben Henderson is the former WEC lightweight champion and is one fight away from a shot at UFC gold.

Many know Henderson as the guy on the receiving end of the "Showtime kick," but he wants to erase that memory by winning a UFC belt.

Henderson and Guida are going to put on a battle for the ages in their No. 1 contender bout at the UFC on Fox debut.

Henderson has notable victories over Jim Miller, Mark Bocek, Donald Cerrone (2x), Jamie Varner, Shane Roller and Anthony Njokuani.

3) Clay Guida

8 of 10

Clay Guida is a longtime UFC lightweight, and for a long time he was considered nothing more than a gatekeeper.

He's proven that wrong so far in 2010 and 2011, as he is now one win away from a shot at the UFC lightweight championship.

Guida's fight against Ben Henderson will likely be a fight-of-the-year candidate, and I can't wait for it.

Guida has notable victories over Anthony Pettis, Takanori Gomi, Nate Diaz, Mac Danzig and Josh Thomson.

2) Gray Maynard

9 of 10

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the Jon Fitch of the lightweight division.

Yes, Gray Maynard did just lose to Frankie Edgar, but he did fight to a draw with him, and he still does hold a victory over him.

Maynard is the clear No. 2 lightweight in the UFC, but he's not likely to get another shot at the belt as long as Frankie Edgar is holding it.

Although, now it looks as though all roads to the title go through Gray.

Maynard has notable victories over Kenny Florian, Nate Diaz, Roger Huerta, Jim Miller, Frankie Edgar and Dennis Siver.

1) Frankie Edgar

10 of 10

Obviously.

Edgar avenged the only loss, and draw, of his career on Saturday night, as he handed Gray Maynard a fourth-round TKO defeat.

Edgar now has a long line of contenders coming after him for the belt, but he'll be ready for them.

Edgar is well on his way to becoming the greatest lightweight in MMA history.
