Cardinals vs. Vikings: 5 Keys to the Game for Minnesota at the Half

Aliko CarterOct 9, 2011

These two teams are both desperate for a win. The Vikings came out of the gates early and went up 28-0 in the first quarter.  Here are five keys to protecting their big lead for another 30 minutes and securing their first win of the season.

1. Keep Going to AP

Adrian Peterson is the MVP of the Vikings; there's no question about it. Today, he's shown that with his great play early. The Vikes rode their workhorse to a touchdown in their first successful scoring drive of the game. He registered 22 yards on the first drive in addition to the TD. He then ran for a 24-yard touchdown score in the next drive. And still in the first quarter, he carried the ball to the end zone with Patrick Peterson on his back. This guy is incredible.

2. Offensive Line Magic

In the same vein, the offensive line has been working wonders for the backfield in this first half. They've been opening up alleys for AP to make his plays, and since he's their main offensive threat, closing up those hole would mean death for the Minnesota offense.

3. Aerial Game

Speaking of offensive threats, to take pressure off AP, the Vikings need to be more consistent with their aerial game. It's hard to find fault with four touchdowns in the first quarter, but they happen to have all been rushing scores.  You can bet that the Cardinals will come out of the second half with a renewed focus on curtailing the run. McNabb has looked somewhat fresh so far, throwing for a few 20-plus-yard completions in the first half, but his consistency is obviously still a problem.

4. Don't Get Complacent on D

The Vikings are pros at letting big leads slip away. Their defense has to stay awake in the second half to avoid another epic meltdown. Yes, it's an extremely big lead, but it's also the Vikings we're talking about. Kolb looks scared out there. Minnesota must not let him get comfortable.

5. Keep the Crowd in It

The Vikings need not only to stop the Cardinals offense, but to continue to score to keep this crowd excited. The Vikings have one of the loudest crowds in the NFL, bolstered by the Metrodome roof. If they can keep these guys loud, Kevin Kolb and the Cardinals may never be able to find a comfort zone.
