NCAA Football Playoffs: Wherefore Art Thou?

Joe Burgett Dec 3, 2008

I am one of the first to say if I am wrong.

I have seen this BCS system for a while now and although it seems to make only minor mistakes,  it does cost teams who deserve chances to be in certain games. E.G. the National Championship.

However, they were teams like Auburn who played in the SEC and USC who played in the PAC-10. Since one was favored to be No.2 because they won more or won with a higher point margin, it was ok.

They didn't play each other and it just happens to be that there is just one team better. But after years of agreeing with the BCS, I now have to say it is stupid.

Example One

Texas beats Oklahoma on a neutral site, although it was in Dallas. It then seems as if Texas is going to the National Championship game. They end up losing to Texas Tech with just 10 seconds to spare, a heartbreaker at the time.

It seemed as if they would be out of the National Title game. But then out of nowhere, Texas Tech loses to Oklahoma. And with Texas ranked higher they should have gone to No.2 right?

Well, yes, and they did for about a week, then the BCS, who by the way does not see the games, sees that Oklahoma is scoring in the 60s against opponents. While Texas is doing quite well and still winning pretty well.

Oklahoma ends up jumping Texas this past week. Therefore, by Big-12 rules, the higher ranked team goes to the Big-12 title game, which is now Oklahoma. Texas, who beat Missouri, Oklahoma's opponent, and Oklahoma is out of the NC Game.

They have no more games, so they would not be able to get a chance to play for a final shot (not that they ever should have had to).

The winner of the Big-12 title game, which looks to be Oklahoma, will most likely go to the Championship game.

If Oklahoma loses, Texas most likely gets a shot in the NC game. This would be only fair since the BCS screwed them in the first place.

Of course, the winner of the SEC Championship game (be it Alabama or Florida) will go the The NC game. But that was easier, because they didn't have the challenge the Big-12 had.

The only way to solve this is to get rid of the BCS; or keep it, but start a play-off system. It would work very well. You could have bowl games as usual for the lower ranked teams.

But you could have a top 10 or top 8 teams be in a series of games to determine a winner of the National Championship. Nobody could complain because anyone in that top 10 or 8 would get just as much of a shot as the No.1 team.

This saves hell on earth for college football fans. You could still have bowl games and could have great teams in them. The colleges would make a lot more money and they would have a fair and balanced system.

President-elect Barack Obama said he'd like to see a play-off too. I cannot stand a team to get screwed again by the BCS. Once Obama gets inaugurated in January he should work on this right away, to solve out crisis. Yes we can!

Hopefully that was not campain crap he promised, if so I am calling for impeachment. We need it more than ever now. They have it in Division II football, why not division I, they'd make a killing in it, what is there to lose?

What do you think, should we have a playoff?
