Oklahoma Sooners Dominate and the Biggest Headlines of College Football Week 6
Despite the fact that we college football fans tell our friends and family that Saturdays are reserved for one thing, sometimes we get dragged to weddings and other nonsensical events. Or we simply miss some games while watching (or tailgaiting for) others.
For those of you who missed some (or all) of the action from Week 6 of the 2011 college football season, here's the rundown of the day's biggest storylines.
If you are a Texas Longhorns or Florida State Seminoles fan, however, you may not want to proceed any further.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers Are Resilient
1 of 8The Nebraska Cornhuskers season was on the brink of disaster Saturday night when Taylor Martinez and the offense finally came alive and rallied to a 34-27 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes had a 27-6 lead midway through the third quarter—with the Nebraska offense having scored just nine points over the last four-and-a-half quarters—when the tide of the game turned.
The injury to quarterback Braxton Miller certainly has to be taken into consideration, with replacement Joe Bausermen finishing 1-of-10 with an interception.
However, the Ohio State defense still allowed 28 points in the last quarter-and-a-half. Nebraska avoided a disastrous 0-2 (conference) start in their inaugural Big Ten season.
Logan Thomas Saved the Virginia Tech Hokies
2 of 8A week after the defense was stout and Logan Thomas' failures at quarterback cost the Virginia Tech Hokies the game against the Clemson Tigers, Thomas was phenomenal in helping avoid a loss as the defense folded.
The Hokies had a 21-7 halftime lead against the Miami Hurricanes, when Jacory Harris and running back Lamar Miller began having their way with the Virginia Tech defense.
Still, even with the Hokies surrendering the lead with two minutes left, Thomas showed poise coming in to lead one last drive, capped off by his 19-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-1. Logan Thomas finished the game 23-of-25 for 310 yards, with three touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns.
[On an unrelated note, I'm still waiting for the inquiry into how the replay official reversed that Miami catch on 3rd-and-18, or how the announcers never took notice of the fact that the ball was bobbled.]
The Oklahoma Sooners Are Really Good...
3 of 8The Oklahoma Sooners dominated the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, making the Red River Shootout (okay, Rivalry) look more like execution by firing squad.
Even with the Longhorns picking up a touchdown and a lot of yardage in clean-up time on Saturday, the Sooners still out-gained Texas 453-259 with a winning of 55-17.
Quarterback Landry Jones had a very crisp performance, finishing 31-of-50 for 367 yards and three touchdowns. The Sooners defense forced five turnovers, returning three for touchdowns.
Or the Texas Longhorns Are Pretty Bad
4 of 8I'm still not convinced the team the Oklahoma Sooners trounced Saturday was actually any good.
The Texas Longhorns came into this game ranked No. 11. But why? The Longhorns finished last year 5-7. So far this season, they've beaten two teams with losing records and two teams that came into Saturday at 3-2.
For most of the game, Texas looked inept on offense and over-matched on defense. I'm not so sure their No. 11 ranking was based off of anything other than their name.
The LSU Tigers Punter Got a Raw Deal
5 of 8The LSU Tigers continued to roll with an easy win over the John Brantley-less Florida Gators Saturday, as most of us assumed they would.
However, one of the more notable events of the game was punter Brad Wang getting a touchdown run off of a fake punt negated by a penalty. It was one of the first instances of the new celebration rule in effect.
The excessive celebration that allegedly occurred seemed very mild, to say the least.
Wang took a sideways glance at his opponents and extended his arms momentarily before scampering into the end zone. Luckily this was a blowout, but if this is the way they are going to enforce the rule, they're going to change the outcome of a big game at some point.
Either way, it's unfortunate to take away a touchdown from a player who will likely never score again.
The Arkansas Razorbacks Looked Very Good Against the Auburn Tigers
6 of 8It was hard to judge these teams coming into this game, as they'd both had significant ups and downs in the early parts of their respective seasons.
The Arkansas Razorbacks left no doubt as to which was the better team after Saturday night however.
After giving up two early touchdowns, the Razorbacks held the Auburn Tigers scoreless for the last three quarters. The Tigers didn't have a single drive longer than 44 yards after the first quarter.
Despite their own offensive struggles in the second half (other than a 92-yard touchdown run from senior wide receiver Joe Adams), the Razorbacks capitalized off turnovers, while quarterback Tyler Wilson played a very clean game.
The Texas A&M Aggies Finally Righted the Ship
7 of 8After a very, very rough two-week stretch (in which they blew huge first half leads against now-top-10 opponents), the Texas A&M Aggies finally have something to celebrate.
In yet another tough game, the Aggies beat the previously unbeaten Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock, in what will probably amount to the final chapter of the rivalry.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill showed a lot of poise, leading his team in a hostile environment when their morale had to be at an all-time low.
Tailback Cyrus Gray also had a big day with 116 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The Florida State Seminoles Are a Disaster
8 of 8Perhaps thinking that they could coast to a victory against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Florida State Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher decided not to start EJ Manuel at quarterback.
Well, replacement Clint Trickett threw two early interceptions, the Seminoles fell behind, and Manuel came in and ended up making mistakes his own mistakes.
After six weeks of the college football season, here, previously No. 5 Florida State sits at 2-3 (0-2, ACC).
All of Chief Osceola's horses and all of Jimbo Fisher's men couldn't put this season back together again.
As they've done for the past decade or so, Florida State fans will have to console themselves with watching '90s replays on ESPN Classic.
