Boxing News: Kell Brook KOs Rafal Jackiewicz in 6, Is Amir Khan Next?
British rising star Kell Brook stopped Rafal Jackiewicz in Round 6 of a scheduled 12-round WBA welterweight eliminator to determine the No. 1 contender for the world championship.
According to U.K.-based publication Mirror, 25-year-old Brook (25-0, 17 KOs) ferociously jabbed 34-year-old Jackiewicz (37-10-1, 19 KOs) to death, before letting off a series of combinations that made quick tomato soup of the older fighter's face.
Jackiewicz couldn't protect himself from Brook's steady stream of rights, so the referee stopped the fight. Jackiewicz had never been stopped before in his entire career.
The fight was held in front of a sold-out crowd in Brook's hometown of Sheffield at the Ponds Forge Arena. Brook's promoter Eddie Hearns seeks a stateside debut for Brook by the end of the year.
One undercard Hearns has his eye on is Showtime's Super Six Finals between American boxer Andre Ward and fellow British warrior Carl Froch in Atlantic City, New Jersey on December 17.
But after this match, Hearns says that he will be looking for a match between Brook and either IBF welterweight world champion Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KOs) or British superstar Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KOs).
An all-British showdown at welterweight between Khan and Brook would sure to be a hot seller in the United Kingdom, where Khan plans to return in March for his welterweight debut.
Khan is currently facing Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KOs) on December 10 in Washington D.C. in what Khan claims is his last fight at junior welterweight.
Khan's upward movement in weight class is an effort to get ready to face current WBC welterweight world champion Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs).
While not much can fully prepare Khan for such a showdown, Brook would definitely offer a good challenge at the weight class.
Brook has eyed a fight with Khan for some time, but he has believed in the past it would take a world championship for Team Khan to take notice.
Viacheslav Senchenko (32-0, 21 KOs) is the WBA welterweight world champion to whose championship Brook is now the No. 1 contender.
Though many European fighters often win world championships and use them to help sell out home stadiums rather than American ones, a decent paycheck can lure a world champion to America.
Slovenia's Jan Zaveck, who faced Berto this past September was lured by HBO's checkbook and world-wide exposure.
If Brook's next fight lands on the Super Six Finals undercard, Showtime has enough pull to do the same.
Time will tell if he can become the next British superstar, but today's performance against Jackiewicz was a great start on that path.
