UFC 136 Results: What's Next for the Main Card Winners?

First LastOct 8, 2011

UFC 136 was highlighted by two title fights, but the night's most memorable moment arguably came from middleweight Chael Sonnen's post-fight speech.

When asked about his victory over Brian Stann, Sonnen immediately called out UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. He offered to leave the UFC forever if he doesn't defeat the pound-for-pound king, and it's a challenge that will come early next year.

In the main event, UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar successfully retained his title after stopping Gray Maynard in the fourth round.

In the co-main event, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo defeated former lightweight title challenger Kenny Florian by unanimous decision over five rounds.

It wasn't Aldo's best performance, but he won the fight with dominant 49-46 scorecards across the board.

Also in action, Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia put their first fight's controversial decision on hold for a second bout that produced the best fight of the night.

This is what's next for the winners.

Joe Lauzon Defeats Melvin Guillard by Submission in Round 1

1 of 5

Lightweight Joe Lauzon got the biggest win of his career after submitting Melvin Guillard in the very first round of their anticipated pay-per-view opener.

It only took 47 seconds, but it was enough for Lauzon to knock down and submit Guillard, who came into the bout on a five-fight win streak with victories over Evan Dunham and Shane Roller.

Now, Lauzon improves his record to 21-6, with all of his victories coming by knockout or submission.

So who is next for the 27-year-old?

He could be the fighter chosen to welcome former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez to the Octagon.

Nam Phan Defeats Leonard Garcia by Unanimous Decision

2 of 5

After three entertaining rounds of featherweight action, Nam Phan was awarded a unanimous decision victory in his rematch with Leonard Garcia.

Since they sit at 1-1 against each other, there is nothing else to do but plan a rubber match. The first fight ended controversially with Garcia winning a split-decision, but they were both highly entertaining fights.

Phan is 17-9 in his MMA career and 1-2 in the UFC. Garcia is 15-8. Their records are similar, and so are their styles. It will be an anticipated rubber match to one of the better trilogies in recent memory.

Chael Sonnen Defeats Brian Stann by Submission in Round 2

3 of 5

Former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen was on a mission in his fight with Brian Stann, and it turned out to be an easy night as he submitted the former U.S. Marine with an arm-triangle choke in the second round.

Sonnen lost his chance at obtaining the middleweight belt last year when he was submitted by Anderson Silva in the fifth round of their fight. After dominating the champion for the better part of four rounds, Silva's last-minute triangle choke sealed the victory and left Sonnen tapping out.

Sonnen was quick to call Silva out on the mic, and it looks as if the fight will go down on Super Bowl weekend, 2012. Sonnen wants Silva to leave the division if he loses. If Sonnen comes up short, he claims he will leave the UFC forever.

José Aldo Defeats Kenny Florian by Unanimous Decision After Five Rounds

4 of 5

Jose Aldo had the toughest challenge of his career in Kenny Florian, but he retained his UFC featherweight title over five rounds, winning four of them on all three judges' scorecards.

The five-round battle was highlighted by Aldo's takedown defense and ability to adapt to any situation that Florian presented.

With the victory, Aldo improves to 20-1 with two successful UFC title defenses under his belt. His status as a top three pound-for-pound fighter still remains, but it wasn't the standout victory many had anticipated for the Brazilian.

For Aldo's next defense, it might come in the form of former NCAA Division I wrestler Chad Mendes, who is 11-0 in MMA.

Frankie Edgar Defeats Gray Maynard by TKO in Round 4

5 of 5

UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar successfully retained his title with his fourth-round knockout victory over former foe Gray Maynard.

Edgar improved to 14-1-1 with the win and has now avenged the only loss of his career. After two fights without a win over Maynard, Edgar finally got it tonight and in the most convincing fashion possible.

With the victory, Edgar now has the duties of sitting on top of the most stacked division in MMA. There are a line of contenders waiting for their chance, and it starts with the No. 1 contender match between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson, which goes down on Nov. 12.

Edgar will be ready to take on the winner of that fight sometime in 2012.
