Winners and Losers from College Football's Week 6
It has been a statement-making Week 6 in college football.
Players and coaches at Oklahoma might not say so but don't think it went unnoticed that the Sooners have lost support in the polls in recent weeks.
A 55-17 trouncing of previously unbeaten rival Texas was Oklahoma's statement.
South Carolina's offense struggled mightily in a loss to Auburn last week.
Welcome Kentucky, which became the victims of a 54-3 thumping by the now-Connor-Shaw-led Gamecocks' offense in what was South Carolina's statement.
Here's a look at some winners and losers so far in Week 6 of the college football season.
Winner-Oklahoma State
1 of 11Storyline: Not given the national acclaim that undefeated powerhouses like Alabama, Louisiana State and Oklahoma have received, Oklahoma State just might be the least well-known 5-0 team in college football.
The sixth-ranked Cowboys did a lot to be heard on Saturday by defeating Kansas, 70-21.
Stars: How is this for a quarterback combination? Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden (24-of-28 for 288 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions) and backup Clint Chelf (14-of-21 for 206 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions) combined to complete 77.6 percent of their passes for nearly 500 yards with a 7-to-0 touchdown to interception ration.
Winner-LSU
2 of 11Storyline: One week ago, Alabama marched in to The Swamp and defeated then-unbeaten Florida, 38-10. This Saturday, it was LSU's turn against the Gators, and the Tigers responded strongly, winning 41-11 at home. This was just one more step in what appears to be a potential No. 1 vs. No. 2 meeting between the Crimson Tide and LSU in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Nov. 5.
Star: LSU receiver Rueben Randle caught four passes for 127 yards (31.8 ypc) and a touchdown against a Gator secondary that played pretty well a week earlier against Alabama.
*Note: You won't see Florida listed as a "loser" this week here. The Gators may have lost by 30 points, but they went into one of the nation's toughest venues with a third-string quarterback taking his first career snaps and played hard the entire game.
Winner-Oklahoma
3 of 11Storyline: Undefeated, yet dropping in the polls, Oklahoma delivered a message Saturday afternoon with a 55-17 defeat of 11th-ranked Texas.
Star: Sooners' quarterback Landry Jones, the season-long Heisman pick of ESPN First Take's Skip Bayless, completed 31-of-50 passes for 367 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. As is often the case, Jones targeted Ryan Broyles (nine receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown) often.
Loser-Texas
4 of 11Storyline: Coming off a 5-7 season, Texas opened 2011 by winning its first four games and moving all the way up to 11th in the most recent Associated Press poll. However, the young Longhorns hadn't faced a ranked team, so there was a certain wait-and-see approach being taken by many observers.
A 55-17 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon in Dallas showed that while Texas might be improved, it isn't quite ready to play with powerhouses like the Sooners.
Star: Fozzy Whitaker returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, carried six times for 43 yards (7.2 ypc) and caught a 15-yard pass.
Winner-Wake Forest
5 of 11Storyline: Since opening the season with a 36-29 overtime loss at Syracuse, Wake Forest has reeled off four straight wins. Three of those came against ACC foes, with Saturday's 35-30 upset of No. 23 Florida State being the biggest one yet.
Stars: Wake Forest quarterback Tanner Price completed 21-of-35 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Josh Harris carried 13 times for 136 yards (10.5 ypc).
Loser-Florida State
6 of 11Storyline: Once a top-five team, Florida State has now dropped three games and should fall out of the top 25 when the new polls are released on Sunday. The latest team to top the Seminoles is Wake Forest, 35-30, on Saturday afternoon.
Star: FSU receiver Rashad Greene caught 12 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown against the Demon Deacons.
Winner-South Carolina
7 of 11Storyline: South Carolina's offense looked inept in a 16-13 loss to Auburn last week, so coach Steve Spurrier replaced inconsistent quarterback Stephen Garcia in the lineup with Connor Shaw. The results were favorable for the Gamecocks, who dominated the Wildcats, 54-3.
Star: Shaw completed 26-of-39 for 311 yards with four touchdowns and (no doubt much to the relief of Spurrier) zero interceptions.
Loser-Kentucky
8 of 11Storyline: It could be argued the trio missed most on any team in the SEC comes from Kentucky. Former receiver Randall Cobb was an all-conference talent, while running back Derrick Locke had tremendous speed and quarterback Mike Hartline was steady, if unspectacular.
With them, the Wildcats' offense could move the ball against just about anyone. Without them, UK has lost four straight, including an 0-3 start in SEC play that has seen the 'Cats outscored 137-20 by Florida, LSU and South Carolina.
A bowl team every year since 2005, Kentucky is 2-4 (0-3) and in danger of missing out this season.
Star: There aren't many options when a team loses 54-3, like Kentucky did on Saturday at South Carolina. That said, Ryan Tydlacka punted nine times for an average of 44.2 yards with a long of 53.
Winner/Loser-Oregon
9 of 11Storyline: Attempting to remain distantly relevant in the BCS national championship chase, Oregon overcame a one-point halftime deficit to defeat California, 43-15, on Thursday night. Still recovering from a season-opening loss to LSU, the Ducks improved to 4-1 (2-0 in the Pac 12).
However, star tailback LaMichael James went down with a dislocated right elbow in the fourth quarter. If he is forced to miss any time, this win was good and bad news for Oregon.
Star: Before he was injured, James carried 30 times for 239 yards and a touchdown.
Winner-Boise State
10 of 11Storyline: Hey, the Broncos' players can't help their schedule. All those guys can do is continue to go out and win impressively each week.
In Friday night's 57-7 victory against Fresno State, Boise State compiled 464 yards of offense while allowing just 270.
Star: Quarterback Kellen Moore completed 23-of-31 passes for 254 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. For the season Moore has completed 102-of-138 passes (73.9 percent) for 1,137 yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Winner-Clemson
11 of 11Storyline: Unranked a few weeks back, Clemson moved up to eighth last week with a victory against Virginia Tech. The Tigers remained unbeaten with a 36-14 defeat of Boston College on Saturday afternoon.
Star: Quarterback Tajh Boyd completed 16-of-26 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown. He also carried seven times for 36 yards and a touchdown.
