College Football Week: How Each BCS Conference Is Performing

Dan VastaOct 8, 2011

In the Red River Rivalry, the Oklahoma Sooners put a beatdown on the Texas Longhorns and many are wondering where should we rank the Sooners.

Should Oklahoma be ranked ahead of LSU and or Alabama? The Tide have Vandy later tonight while LSU is taking on an injury riddled Florida Gators squad.

Outside of the top three teams in the nation, here are the rest of the latest scores, updates and analysis from the power six conferences.

SEC

1 of 6

South Carolina 54, Kentucky 3 Final

With Connor Shaw winning back the starting gig he led the Gamecocks (639 offensive yards) to an aerial assault over the Wildcats. Shaw was 26-of-39 passes for 311 yards and a career-high 4 touchdowns. He received some help from Marcus Lattimore who went over 100 yards and once against the defense looked fabulous limiting the offensively challenged 'Cats to just 96 total yards.

Mississippi State 21, UAB 3 Final

Chris Relf came into the season as arguably one of the better signal callers in the SEC and after trailing 3-0 at halftime, Dan Mullen decided to go with Tyler Russell. Luckily the Bulldogs racked up over 300 yards in the second half (416 total) with Russell throwing three touchdowns to give Mullen and his 'Dogs the 21-3 victory.

LSU 41, Florida 11 Final

In a battle between two ranked teams. the Bayou Bengals proved to the nation why they are arguably the best team in the nation. Florida was without their top two quarterbacks but the Tigers defense allowed just 213 total yards against one of the faster teams in the nation. LSU gashed the Gators for 238 yards and Jarrett Lee just needs to continue to play mistake free football with the occasional bomb in order for LSU to maintain crushing their opponents.

Arkansas 38, Auburn 14 Final

Wilson threw for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns in their route over Auburn. Give some props to Joe Adams, Greg Childs and Jarius Wright who have gone bonkers throughout the season. After they took a whipping by Alabama most did not think they could show up with Texas A&M and Auburn on the schedule, but they lit up the scoreboard on both occasions combining for 80 points!

The most underrated unit in the SEC might just be the defense of the Razorbacks. They may give up a ton of yards, but they are your typical bend but don't break defense. They forced three picks on Auburn quarterbacks and though they have up 290 rushing yards I wonder just how far this team can go with the schedule opening up a bit.

Alabama 34, Vanderbilt 0 Final

After they only led the Commodores 14-0 at halftime, many wondered if Alabama was a bit high in the sky after their beatodown over the Gators last weekend. Well, after Saban talked to his men at halftime things got ugly for poor Vandy. The Tide literally rolled with a shutout, 34-0.

The defense is loaded with NFL stars for years to come and they were able to slowly call off the dogs halfway through the fourth quarter. AJ McCarron continues to makes plays in the passing game and is truly an excellent game manager. Trent Richardson only toted the rock 19 times but still ran for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Georgia 20, Tennessee 12 Final

Aaron Murray continues to develop and his backfield freshman mate Isiah Crowell looks like the best freshman in the country at his position. The frosh went off for 58 yards and two touchdowns. The amazing stat was the Bulldogs defense that gave up negative 20 yards rushing! That is right the Vols went backwards 20 yards thanks to the UGA stout defense.

Big 12

2 of 6

Oklahoma 55, Texas 17 Final

Landry Jones absolutely torched the young secondary of Texas and the game was never in doubt as OU took a 34-10 lead at halftime. Texas held their ground limiting the Sooners to two field goals right out of the gates, but it was all downhill from then on. Case McCoy fumbled it twice whereas David Ash threw two picks and also fumbled once. Out of the three combined fumbles, two were picked up and returned for touchdowns. Kenny Stills and Ryan Broyles could not be stopped and they just lit up a very young Longhorns defense. Will Oklahoma jump atop the rankings in the AP Poll?

Oklahoma State 70, Kansas 28 Final

Brandon Weeden and the Pokes high octane offense is simply untouchable at the moment as the offense hung 600 yards on the dot. Weeden did not even play a whole half as the Cowboys led 49-7 when Weeden left in the closing minutes of the first half. The defense did allow 478 yards which could be a concern if the starters were the ones who gave it up, but in a game that was a blowout from the get-go there is nothing to be greatly concerned with at the moment.

Kansas State 24, Missouri 17 Final

The Wildcats continue to fly under the radar with another victory over a solid opponent. They were in control the entire game and if it were not for a late touchdown by the Tigers, Kansas State had a fairly comfortable victory despite getting outgained by 50 yards. Dominating at the lines of scrimmage is a large reason why they maintain to do just enough to win.

Baylor 49, Iowa State 26 Final

How good is RGIII? Griffin once had more touchdowns than incompletions which is a filthy good stat, but he has come down to Earth. In their three touchdown victory over the Cyclones, Griffin threw for just 212 yards and a touchdown.

However, he also ran for 107 yards and a touchdown as the Bears gashed Iowa State for 391 yards on the ground. The offense put an absurd 603 yards of offense and though they gave up 425 to Iowa State this team will clearly live and die by their superstar signal caller.

Texas A&M 45, Texas Tech 40 Final

The defense did not necessarily improve from their devastating loss to Arkansas last weekend, but thank god this offense is so balanced.

They had nearly 200 yards on both the ground (221) and through the air (189). Ryan Tannehill was a bit over hyped coming into the season as many senior signal callers usually are at Texas A&M, but they still have the fireworks offensively to put up a fight against the heavyweights in the Big12.

Pac-12

3 of 6

Oregon 43, California 15 Final (Thursday Night)

Despite dislocating his elbow, LaMichael James went bonkers rushing 239 yards in their rout over Cal. Things started out slowly trailing out of the gates 15-14 at halftime, however the defense did not break down and the offense racked up 365 total yards of offense.

Arizona State at Utah

They can thread the needle with Brock Osweiler with a bevy of receivers, but their running game is still lacking. Cameron Marshall is not a speed demon runner as his solid frame (5'1"", 215-pounds) backs that up, but he clearly needs to get it going. He only ran for 47 yards on 21 carries, but luckily Osweiler was able to throw for 325 yards and three touchdowns. The Utes struggles a bit on offense with their backup Jon Hays who three three picks as the Utes had five turnovers for the game.

Stanford 48, Colorado 7 Final

Andrew Luck wants you all to come out and play! Yikes, nobody has even been able to compete with the Cardinals right now. The best player in the country led his Stanford to 553 yards against a very suspect Colorado defense. Forget how bad the Buffaloes are for a minute because Stanford might be the most underrated team in America. I understand they have not played anybody, but I said the same thing last season and they made me look clueless in thinking Virginia Tech could hang with them in the Orange Bowl. Stanford lost their all-everything linebacker Shayne Skov and thanks to Chase Thomas and the rest of the front seven they have not missed a beat.

Washington State at UCLA- TBA

Oregon State 37, Arizona 27

Once against the Wildcats continue to shoot themselves in the foot and they cannot buy a win at the moment. Their running game has been atrocious as they totaled just 53 yards against a mediocre Beavers run defense. Oregon State was able to muster 123 yards on the ground as their 13 minute advantage in the time of possession made up the ten point difference.

Big Ten

4 of 6

Purdue 45, Minnesota 17 Final

Coming off a blowout loss at home to Notre Dame the Boilermakers bounced back with authority over Minnesota limiting them to 213 yards of offense. Purdue once led 45-3 with a few moments remaining in the third quarter when the Gophers were finally able to reach pay dirt.

Illinois 41, Indiana 20

The Hoosiers had a few chances early and they were unable to make the Illini pay. After a Nathan Scheelhasse fumble, the Hooiers could not muster a touchdown when it was first-and-goal from the three yard line. Their defense never gave them a chance to pull off the upset as they allowed 518 yards of offense to this productive Illinois squad. The Illini ran for 308 yards with four different backs comibing for those yards. Don't look now about the fighting Zooker's could be a New Year's Day Bowl squad.

Penn State 13, Iowa 3

We thought the Penn State offense was inept but it turned out to be the Hawkeyes offense that could not put together scoring drives. James Vanderberg was often on his back as he was sacked five times and their rushing attack was missing totaling for only 84 yards.

Michigan 42, Northwestern 24 Final

Many thought Michigan was on upset alert going into Ryan Field against a decent Northwestern and trailing at halftime was a concern. However, after forcing a few turnovers and pitching a shutout in the second half makes Michigan a legit top ten team! Or does it? Michigan has not knocked off any ranked teams as of yet though Notre Dame should be ranked soon, but we still have yet to find out everything there is to know about the Wolverines.

Nebraska 34, Ohio State 27 Final

Nebraska survived against an Ohio State that was anemic on offense all season and yet they were able to hang 27 points and 351 total yards of Nebraska's questionable defense.

The injury riddled season that Jared Crick has suffered has played a major factor in those skewed but truthful numbers. Rex Burkhead and Martinez once again combined to rush for over 200 yards. Burkhead actually totaled for 178 yards with two touchdowns.

Lavonte David is making huge plays behind the line of scrimmage and the secondary is doing just enough to avoid disaster. The schedule is favorable outside of trips to Ann Arbor and Happy Valley which could grant them their wishes to play the more than likely a top five Badgers squad in the Big Ten Championship.

ACC

5 of 6

Wake Forest 35, Florida State 30 Final

Once ranked fifth in the country, the Seminoles have now lost three in a row suffering consecutive divisional losses. Clint Trickett struggled mightily in the first half until he was replaced by EJ Manuel in the final drive of the first half. The  'Noles could not take care of the ball as their five turnovers cost them this ball game. Two picks a piece from Trickett and Manuel gave Wake Forest a five minute advantage in the time of possession and Tanner Price's four passing touchdowns was too much for Florida State to overcome.

Georgia Tech 21, Maryland 18 Final

After getting benched from a few miserable possessions, Danny O'Brien had to watch from the bench for the entire second half. Georgia Tech's signal caller Tevin Washington threw and ran for over 100 yards and he also ran in two touchdowns in their close victory. Maryland only had 87 yards passing and while they did run for 246, it was not enough to match the Yellow Jackets 272 yards rushing.

North Carolina 14, Louisville 7 Final

In a defensive battle, the Tar Heels landed a few more punches to secure their seven-point victory. North Carolina's Giovani Bernard ran for over 100 yards and a had a touchdown though the team only had 11 first downs as a team. More importantly UNC has a favorable schedule and is now 5-1 on the season with their big home game against Miami awaiting next weekend.

Virginia Tech 38, Miami 35 Final

Though Bud Foster will certainly not be happy with his defense, they found a way to get a victory thanks in large part to a breakout performance from quarterback Logan Thomas. The former tight end was able to gash and rip apart the Hurricanes defense for 338 total yards of offense. Virginia Tech has long ways to go as far as becoming a contender to win the ACC, but right now Clemson is far ahead of this squad.

North Carolina State 38, Central Michigan 24 Final

A bend but don't break defense was the difference in North Carolina State's victory. Ryan Radcliff ended up throwing four picks whereas Mike Glennon threw four touchdowns. The defense still has miles to go if they want to make a bowl game, but it is good to know that the offense is still producing.

Clemson 36, Boston College 14 Final

Tajh Boyd suffered a scary knee injury as he was carted off the field (he walked to the cart, severity unknown) but his numbers were still productive throwing for 283 yards and a touchdown. They were also able to run the ball totaling for 180 yards against a solid BC run defense. Clemson remains the easy choice to represent the ACC in the BCS, but they have the talent to go even further.

Big East

6 of 6

West Virginia 43, Connecticut 16 Final

Geno Smith once again showed what he is made of threading the needle 45 times for 450 yards and four touchdowns. Stedman Bailey was the prime target hauling in seven passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. The Mountaineers go to the Carrier Dome next Friday whereas the Huskies get the South Florida Bulls at home next weekend.

North Carolina 14, Louisville 7 Final

Louisville could not find much offense with Teddy Bridgewater under center throwing for only 173 yards with a touchdown and an interception. A slew of runners combined for 100 yards however nine penalties for 78 killed the Cardinals early and often.  The 'Ville must bounce in time for their road tilt against Cincinnati.

Rutgers 34, Pittsburgh 10 Final

It appaears Pitt suffered a major hangover after throttling USF. Getting blown out to Rutgers three plus touchdowns goes to show you that turnovers often decide games. The total yards were nearly identical, but Tin Sunseri ended up having a terrible game throwing three picks.

Syracuse 37, Tulane 34 Final

Once against the 'Cuse walked off (literally) with a fortunate victory. Doug Marone has a knack for winning the close games so the only thing ask is can he continue to keep it up all season long? Their defense got gashed for 471 yards, but they were forced two crucial turnovers that ended up deciding the game.
