Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson and the Top Heisman Candidates Playing Today

Martha CoppOct 8, 2011

Move over, Andrew Luck. There's a new guy in town.

According to ESPN's Heisman Predictor, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is now ranked third behind Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson and Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson.

Perhaps the most impressive climb has been by Wilson, whose Badgers show no sign of slowing down.

Boise State QB Kellen Moore and Baylor's Robert Griffin round out the top-five contenders, with Oregon running back LaMichael James a close sixth.

So how will the remaining candidates fare today? Click "Begin Slideshow" to see how the 2012 Heisman candidates will perform this week.

Denard Robinson, Michigan

1 of 5

Brady Hoke must be doing something right, as Ryan McCrystal's Heisman Predictor has quarterback Denard Robinson listed as No. 1.

Robinson has passed for eight touchdowns and rushed for six more this season. The Florida native had a huge year in 2010, passing for over 2,500 yards.

Fans were concerned when Michigan received a new leader this year, but that hasn't seemed to faze Robinson.

Michigan travels to Northwestern this week for Big Ten conference play. The Wildcats' defense is mediocre at best, struggling against Army and Illinois earlier this season. Look for Robinson to have another huge game this week.

However, Wolverine fans shouldn't get too comfortable seeing Robinson's name at the top of the Heisman watch list. The quarterback only has a 54 percent efficiency rating, and he has thrown six interceptions this season. In addition, he has yet to play against any ranked opponents.

The bottom line: Robinson will have a big game against a shaky Wildcats defense, but don't expect him to stay at the top of the Heisman list all season.

Russell Wilson, Wisconsin

2 of 5

Wisconsin's Russell Wilson is turning heads this year.

The Badgers, favored to win the Big Ten, are currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. Wisconsin averages 48 points per game, and this is heavily due to their quarterback game.

Wilson boasts an impressive 75 percent completing rating this season. He has thrown 13 touchdowns and only one interception. He threw for 3,000 yards as a sophomore, 3,500 yards as a junior, and is on pace to do it again as a senior.

This week Wilson is on a bye, and Wisconsin will host Indiana on October 15. If Wilson keeps performing the rest of the season, he will certainly give Andrew Luck a run for his money.

Andrew Luck, Stanford

3 of 5

Andrew Luck. What a household named he turned out to be.

He's been the favorite to win the Heisman since preseason. He is still the favorite to win the Heisman, and he will certainly be the first pick of the NFL draft.

Eleven touchdowns. One interception. Two sacks.

What else is there to say?

Today, Colorado will visit Stanford in what is sure to be an easy victory for the Cardinals. Luck will have no problem against a 1-4 Colorado team, and he will continue to make his case for the coveted award.

As the season goes on, Luck will have more opportunities to showcase his talents against a more competitive field. The Cardinals will play USC at the end of October and take on Oregon next month.

As far as today goes, Luck will have no problem flaunting his talent on the field.

Kellen Moore, Boise State

4 of 5

Boise State already played last night, and they dominated Fresno State 57-7. Quarterback Kellen Moore threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns. He has over 1,100 yards for the season, and Moore will lead the Broncos to an undefeated season.

However, Moore's chances are hurt by the lack of quality opponents on the Broncos' schedule. Considering that the second-best offensive team in the conference is the Air Force, Moore will most likely not win the Heisman.

Robert Griffin, Baylor

5 of 5

Robert Griffin officially has more pass incompletions than touchdowns passes this season.

Yes, you read that correctly. More incompletions than touchdowns.

Griffin has recorded 18 touchdowns this season, and only 20 incompletions. He has the highest pass efficiency rating in the country (82 percent), and he boasts an impressive 230 quarterback rating.

However, Griffin threw a game-ending interception against Kansas State last week. The Bears were on their way to driving down the field, but Griffin's fourth-quarter interception sealed their fate.

Tonight, Iowa State visits Baylor. Iowa State is coming off a 37-14 loss to Texas last week, in a game that was riddled with penalties and errors.

While the Cyclones are 3-1, they are ranked 85th in allowing points. With Griffin upset about last week's loss and the fact that Baylor has home field advantage, look for Griffin to bounce back and prove he is a contender for this year's Heisman.
