Week 6 College Football Picks: 5 Top 25 Teams on Upset Alert
College football is different from any other sport in the United States.
In every other sport, an occasional loss is expected. In college football, just one loss can end all dreams in a season.
Out of all the teams in the Top 25, only 13 undefeated teams remain.
A single loss could ruin the season for those 13 teams. For the ones with a loss already, another would ultimately destroy all hope of a National Championship.
Here are five teams in the Top 25 on upset alert this weekend.
No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies
1 of 5Virginia Tech has always relied on a great defense to walk away from games with wins.
Typically they had at least an average offense to go with it. This year that just isn't the case. The Hokies offense is pretty awful.
Last week Virginia Tech faced their first ranked opponent in Clemson. They were dominated 23-3.
This week they play a Miami Hurricanes team that is constantly up and down. If they have an up game, they will walk away with a win. If they have a down game, it's still possible they pull off a win.
No. 20 Kansas State Wildcats
2 of 5Last week Kansas State pulled off a crazy come-from-behind victory against Baylor in a game that would launch them into the Top 25.
At 4-0, Kansas State needs to prove they belong in the rankings this week with a win over the Missouri Tigers.
Although the Tigers are sitting at a 2-2 record, it's pretty deceiving.
They lost to Arizona State in overtime and battled Oklahoma to the final whistle last week.
Both teams have a great rushing attack and solid defenses. The team that has a better day through the air could walk away as the winner, and that will likely be Missouri.
No. 12 Michigan Wolverines
3 of 5The Michigan Wolverines are currently ranked No. 12 in the nation after a hot 5-0 start.
There are some worries about Michigan, though. Their toughest opponent this season was Notre Dame, and they needed a last-second miracle to win that game.
Michigan won't have their first true test until next week against Michigan State, but there could be a sleeper upset in the making this week.
Northwestern showed some life last week upon the return of quarterback Dan Persa.
Persa threw for four touchdowns in the Wildcats loss last week.
Chances are that the Northwestern defense won't have an answer for Denard Robinson, but if they can hold him, Persa and the offense could threaten to end Michigan's unbeaten season.
No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks
4 of 5Last week Arkansas pulled off a nail biter against the Texas A&M Aggies. This weekend could pose a similar style of game against the Auburn Tigers.
Auburn has been overlooked since the departure of Cam Newton to the NFL.
However, they have looked like a solid team so far this season. At 4-1, they have defeated two ranked opponents and fallen only to the Clemson Tigers.
This game should be one of the more exciting shootouts this weekend. It could go either way.
The difference maker may be Auburn's ability to run the ball, and Arkansas' lack of production at the position.
No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners
5 of 5This weekend marks the 106th meeting in the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma.
In recent years, the majority of the times the two teams have met, one had already suffered their first loss of the season.
That isn't the case this year.
Texas seems to be getting back on track after a tough going last season. Case McCoy and David Ash give the Longhorns a multi-dimensional offense from the quarterback position.
That said, Landry Jones on Oklahoma is by far the best quarterback in the game.
None of that matters, though. This game will come down to defense. Both Oklahoma and Texas possess defenses that can change games with turnovers.
What player will step up and make the game changing turnover? His team will win.
