UFC 140: What Happens Now With the Light Heavyweight Division?
Who expected that one?
Today, Dana White announced that the next in line to fight Jon Jones would not be Rashad Evans, but would be Lyoto Machida instead.
Machida has been out since his last fight, a knockout over Randy Couture at UFC 129.
Meanwhile, Jones has been quite active as of late, having fought three times so far this year.
Originally, Rashad Evans was set to fight for the belt next, but now that he isn't, it throws the light heavyweight division into a bit of disarray.
Read on to see the jumble.
Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida for the Belt
1 of 4It was just announced today that Lyoto Machida will now take on Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 140.
This fight is set, and it is definitely up next.
Unless someone gets injured of course.
Shogun Rua vs. Dan Henderson
2 of 4At UFC 139, Mauricio Rua is set to face off against Dan Henderson in a light heavyweight bout.
Originally, many thought this would be a No. 1 contender match, with the winner taking on the winner of the Jon Jones-Rashad Evans fight.
The Jones-Evans fight is no longer the case, but one would imagine Evans is still the No. 1 contender.
Perhaps Evans fights the winner of this, and the winner of that fight takes on the winner of Jones-Machida.
But wait, Dana White recently said that if Henderson were to win, then...
Dan Henderson vs. Anderson Silva II?
3 of 4That Hendo may get another crack at Anderson Silva and the middleweight title.
If that is to happen, then maybe Rashad could slip right back in, and fight for the title after Machida.
But he'll be out for a long time, so maybe he has to take another fight in the meantime.
Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis?
4 of 4This fight was supposed to happen at UFC 133, but an injury to Phil Davis forced him out.
This fight may be next in the cards for Rashad Evans, as he may, once again, need to risk his No. 1 contender status, and his shot at Jon Jones.
There are dozens of ways that this whole situation could pan out, and there is no way to know for sure.
We'll just have to wait and see.
