WWE: 8 People Who Could Potentially Be Made the New Raw GM
Last night, Triple H was relieved of his duties as leader of Raw after the walkout. John Laurenitis was appointed a temporary GM in his place.
We all know Triple H is poised to be the new leader of WWE behind the scenes once Vince steps away from the business, if that ever happens. What we do not know is how long he will maintain that role on screen.
One thing WWE does exceptionally well is choose people to be the kayfabe leaders of the company. Teddy Long has been a long standing GM on Smackdown, William Regal was Raw's GM for awhile and even Steve Austin has worn the hat of GM in the past.
This is a list of eight people who I feel would be good choices for an on screen leadership role once Triple H decides to stay behind the scenes and Vince McMahon steps down altogether.
Some will be people within the WWE, while others are choices who are unlikely, but would fit in well with the environment and the program.
William Regal
1 of 8As I pointed out before, William Regal has already had the job of Raw GM, and I thought he was a great fit.
The European brawler is known worldwide as being a tough individual who will go toe to toe against anybody, kind of a perfect trait for a leader to have. Regal has plenty of upside in terms of his on screen presence.
He has always proven he is great on the mic, and he can play both the heel and the face roles well, although I think we can all agree that as a heel he is far better.
He was taken out of the GM role because he failed a wellness test and got suspended, but on screen, they had him lose a match to lose the title.
Who knows how far Regal could have gone in the position had he not failed that test? He has hinted at a possible retirement from the ring, and with his announcing going virtually unnoticed, it may be time to find something else for him to do.
I think if he were to be put in the position of a leader in WWE, then he could last for quite awhile in that position.
Chris Jericho
2 of 8Rumors began going around this past week that Jericho had begun talks with WWE to return on a part time basis, possibly similar to the Rock's current deal, or the one Undertaker has.
Jericho has every quality you could want in an on-screen boss. He is cocky, arrogant, intelligent, charismatic and well respected by fans.
His credibility is already there. Just hand him the reigns, and he would be a very entertaining general manager for Raw.
Jericho has been busy with his band and TV appearances, but that does not mean he could not simply show up on Mondays, do his thing and then leave to go back to whatever he was doing.
Jericho even has a long history with Triple H to where they could make a very good storyline about him coming back to WWE to oust Trips from his role as COO, and it would be especially entertaining if they had him in cahoots with Stephanie considering the history she and Jericho have had on Raw over the years.
I think it is safe to say that Jericho will never wrestler for another US based company other than WWE, and it's getting to a point where he may not want to wrestle for much longer, so putting him in this role makes good sense if WWE wishes to keep capitalizing off his image.
Jim Ross
3 of 8Good ole JR would make a great leader for WWE for many reasons. He has been around the business longer than most, and he has probably forgotten more than I currently know about the sport.
In the past, Jim Ross has been a corporate employee for WWE recruiting talents, so he is well versed on the backstage politics of the company, and he has been a fan favorite for his announcing for decades.
He gets bigger pops when he comes out to the ring than some of WWE's biggest stars, all because he has earned the respect of the fans through his dedication and hard work.
The man even came back numerous times after suffering bouts of Bells Palsy, something that might end an announcer's career.
Ross is always willing to help the company, and that includes being made to look like a fool in front of millions for the sake of a good storyline. I can only imagine his reaction when they told him he would be duking it out with Cole during the King vs Cole match at WrestleMania.
I think JR is a perfect choice to be an on screen leader in WWE.
Shawn Michaels
4 of 8WWE would obviously love to have HBK back in an official capacity on a weekly basis, and with him promising to never wrestle again, this could be their only way to get the showstopper back.
Shawn has gone through many roles in WWE from Jobber to tag team champion to singles star to icon, but one role he never had for more than a week was general manager.
Shawn has always been entertaining; no one can deny that, and with his mic skills and admiration from both fans and wrestlers, he could be the perfect choice.
Plus, imagine the storyline they could make out of Shawn pulling some kind of corporate takeover on his best friend. They could have him come in once a week and then go home to do his hunting show and spend time with his family.
I will admit that I am somewhat selfish in my desire to see HBK back in action, but I would take him in a different role if that's what it took to get one of the most entertaining men the sport has ever seen back in a WWE arena.
Michael Cole
5 of 8As much as I may hate to admit it, and as much as you may hate to agree with me, Michael Cole is one of the best non wrestling heels in the business.
The heat he generates is second only to Vickie Guerrero in terms of what a non wrestler can get. WWE did something right when they realized fans never gelled with Cole and used that as a way to get him over huge as a heel.
I never thought Cole was anything special until he started this persona of the snarky jerk announcer. Now I think he may be the WWE's ace in the hole.
I know some people felt his match at Mania went too long and took time away from wrestlers who worked their butts off only to be snubbed, but I think Cole adds a lot to the WWE experience.
Heel announcers are somewhat necessary in wrestling. King was one of the best when he was heelish, Bobby Heenan is still unsurpassed in my opinion, and JBL was one of the more entertaining heel announcers ever.
Cole could easily step into the leadership role since he basically was the leader during the whole anonymous GM storyline
Steve Austin
6 of 8The man from Broken Skull Ranch has worn the hat of Raw GM in the past, and he could easily do it again for a short time.
Austin has focused on Hollywood for a few years, but he always manages to find his way back to WWE, whether it's through Tough Enough or as a special guest Ref.
Having Austin come in and raise hell for a few months would make for some interesting television, especially if he was around during WrestleMania when The Rock, his old rival, faces John Cena.
Austin is probably an unlikely choice for more than a few weeks stint with his movie schedules, but he could always come in and be fired right away like Triple H just was.
Super Dave Osborne
7 of 8Bob Einstein, better known to the world as Marty Funkhauser on Curb Your Enthusiasm, would be an awesome choice, and I will tell you why.
For those unfamiliar, Bob Einstein is the man who CM Punk is referencing every time he calls John Laurinaitis Funk-man or Funkhauser. The reason is because John sounds exactly like Bob Einstein. They both have the same voice, height, hairstyle and general look as well.
When Laurinaitis first showed up my first thought was, this guy sounds like Funkhauser. Then, CM Punk said it and I knew I was not the only one seeing the connection.
Bob Einstein is one of the funniest dry comics on the planet, and if you don't believe me, just check out the video above from his first show Super Dave Osborne.
Super Dave is an Evel Kinevel type stuntman whose stunts always seem to go wrong. His persona would fit well within WWE, if nothing more than for comedy reasons alone.
They could even make up a storyline on Super Dave being Laurinaitis's brother or cousin; any way to have them be related would make the whole thing even funnier.
I know this is as likely as Haystacks Calhoun making a comeback, but a guy can hope.
Daniel Tosh
8 of 8I know a lot of people will disagree with this one, but I think Daniel Tosh would be a good choice for a GM for many reasons.
I know his comedy is not geared towards the same audience as WWE, but he is not only a dirty comic, he can be clean and funny.
He is a lifelong WWE fan, which any fan of his show knows well. He has had some WWE legends such as Koko B Ware and Sgt Slaughter appear on his show, and he himself has dressed up like wrestlers numerous times.
He has called out Arn Anderson on his show, and he even had indy star Scorpio Sky come on to teach a backyard wrestler how to do a real moonsault.
His love of the sport would make him want to try hard and do well, and if given the chance, I think he could prove to be popular among fans and wrestlers.
