UFC 126: Vitor Belfort Says He Can Knockout "Lucky" Anderson Silva
Vitor Belfort is seeking vengeance for Anderson Silva's "lucky moment" at UFC 126.
The proposed pound-for-pound king knocked out Belfort in the first round with a vicious front kick that is widely considered as one of the best finishes of 2011.
Belfort rebounded from the devastating loss at UFC 133, where he dismantled Judo stud Yoshihiro Akiyama.
Still, he can't seem to get over the way things went down in his bout with Silva. The front kick left a bad taste in his mouth—literally.
""Hands down, he won the fight. We won't question that. We won't question his ability. We won't question his greatness as a fighter. He really accomplished his training that he did. It was a lucky moment, but it wasn't a lucky kick for him because he trained that kick, but it was a lucky moment in the fight. He knows I can knock him out," Belfort told Spencer Lazara of MMAInterviews.TV.
"
The way Belfort lost to Silva could hurt his chances of getting a rematch. With such a devastating and quick finish, it's hard to sell the idea of Belfort deserving an immediate rematch.
There are other fighters ahead of him in the title picture including Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson and possibly even Brian Stann.
Out of any fighter in the UFC, Sonnen was by far Silva's toughest opponent. He dominated "The Spider" for four and a half rounds before giving up a triangle choke late in the fifth round.
"If they want to give this fight to Chael Sonnen, Chael Sonnen has his moment, and I think he's the only guy who deserves to fight Anderson Silva in the moment, but besides him, I think I deserve a rematch," said Belfort.
Sonnen is set to face Stann on Saturday night at UFC 136. Depending on what happens between Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 139, the winner of the bout between Sonnen and Stann could be awarded a shot at the UFC title.
When asked about the Sonnen and Stann bout, Belfort didn't seem overly enthused about the matchup.
"Chael Sonnen is a very boring fighter. He doesn't knock people out, but he can wrestle you, and if you don't know the Jiu-Jitsu game, you'll be in trouble with him," Belfort said.
Belfort was expected to welcome former Strikeforce veteran Cung Le to the UFC in November, but an injury forced him to withdraw from the fight.
He is now targeting a return on December 30 at UFC 141.
