Sin Cara: 10 Reasons the WWE Should Abandon This Gimmick

Matthew HemphillOct 6, 2011

When Sin Cara came to the WWE most fans were excited.  The man was known to be a wrestling superstar in Mexico and most expected him to be the next breakthrough Latino superstar.

In just a few short months it seems like Sin Cara has not only failed to reach this expectation, but fell miserably short.

There are fans who are still willing to give Sin Cara the benefit of the doubt, but it might not be for the best.

Here is why the WWE and the fans should just let the character go.

Sin Cara Can't Give off Emotions

1 of 11

Very few performers can pull off emotions while not letting the crowd see their face.

Kane was one of those individuals.  He was able to give off a feeling even without letting anyone see what was underneath his mask.

Sin Cara can't seem to do the same.  It's hard knowing what is going on beneath the mask and what the character is feeling.

Unlike Rey Mysterio's mask which allows fans to see his eyes and mouth, Sin Cara's doesn't.

This makes it hard for fans to empathize with him, or even understand what is going on inside of his head. If a wrestler can't connect with the fans, then what's the point of him being there?

His Matches Have Bad Lighting

2 of 11

The Sin Cara lights that come on during his entrance are great.

The fact that they don't shut off for his match isn't.

The WWE tried something new, and for that they should be applauded.  Trying to do different things with their wrestlers in an attempt to give each of them a unique feel is always a good thing.  Even if most of those ideas don't work out, one or two will catch on and make money for the company.

This isn't one of those ideas.  It just makes it harder to focus on the match and makes it a little harder to see what is going on.

The WWE Can't Force Fans to Accept Sin Cara as the Next Latino Superstar

3 of 11

Just like Rey Mysterio was never supposed to be anything more than a cruiserweight champion, Sin Cara can't be forced to be the next Mexican superstar.

Sometimes a company can take a man from square one and make him a star.  It doesn't happen very often though.

That is because it takes a certain combination of charisma, talent and opportunity to make a superstar. Sin Cara has been handed opportunity after opportunity and just hasn't seemed to find the fame that the WWE and many fans thought he would.

It just might be that the fans and Sin Cara will never fully mesh like Rey Mysterio did.

Sometimes, it just doesn't happen.

Sin Cara Has Been Given so Many Opportunities

4 of 11

This was touched on in the last slide, and it deserves to be given a bit more depth.

Sin Cara has been given an incredible amount of opportunities.

Most wrestlers know that if they mess up once on the big stage, that could be the end for them.  Sin Cara not only has messed up, but seems to continually do so every single time he gets put on TV.

When he failed on Raw, instead of being sent down to the minors he was switched to SmackDown where the show is taped instead of live.

He was given matches against Primo and Chavo Guerrero in a chance to look good even when he didn't.

Most wrestlers wouldn't get half as many chances as him and yet it seems like he is going to get even more.

Sin Cara Is Taking Up a Spot That Could Be Used by a More Motivated Wrestler

5 of 11

There are only so many spots that exist on the WWE roster.

Sin Cara holds one of them.

He is being given the slot and the TV time that another wrestler could be using to prove that they are the next big thing.

Instead, Cara is using that time and status to prove that he is not.  He just can't seem to get it right.

Any number of wrestlers could have proven to be an important commodity in the time he's been in the WWE.  Instead they are somewhere else still trying to get a break.

His Entrance Is Too Easy to Botch

6 of 11

This could happen to any wrestler.

Having Sin Cara's entrance involve a trampoline is just asking for mistakes to happen.  It has too much of a random factor that could lead to him getting hurt or screwing up the entrance.

There are other superstars who have had complex entrances, but the trampoline is just too much of a chaotic factor.

It makes the entrance look amazing when it goes right, but when it goes wrong it just looks silly.

And it only takes a few times of botching an entrance to make a joke of a wrestler.

It happened to the Shockmaster.

Sin Cara Botches Too Many Moves

7 of 11

This is just embarrassing.  To some degree, it makes sense though.

Cara was immediately pulled from Mexico and put into the WWE without any training in how to wrestle their kind of wrestling.

While I am all for guys who wrestle different ways, that doesn't mean that they can't learn how to merge it with the WWE style of wrestling.

Most guys on the roster need to know how to work together, and if they haven't trained together then knowing the same style will help.

Sin Cara just doesn't seem to mesh with any of the WWE wrestlers.  For someone who was so dominant in Mexico it's hard to believe he can mess up so much here.

Yet, it seems to be happening.

Sin Cara Has Backstage Heat with the Wrestlers

8 of 11

Sin Cara probably hurt a couple of feelings just by getting called up immediately to the WWE locker room instead of being put at FCW.

Of course, incidents like telling the other wrestlers that some of his matches in Mexico were shoots probably didn't help either.

Cara just can't seem to get any respect from the other wrestlers.

It might be because he botches so many moves.

It could be because he states that some of his matches were shoots in Mexico.

Or it could be...

Sin Cara Has Already Failed the WWE Wellness Policy Once

9 of 11

Back around the Money in the Bank, Cara was put in an injury angle and it was found out that it was because he had failed the WWE Wellness Policy.

Though he claimed innocence, it's hard to believe him.

The fact is that he has been with the WWE for less than a year and he has already violated their testing policy once.  For someone who really hasn't made it to the main event scene, to do that so quickly is embarrassing.

The WWE is trying to present themselves as squeaky clean and that kind of violation isn't helping.

What makes matters worse is that even though Sin Cara was out of the WWE at this time, they didn't want the character to lose the momentum that he had, so they had a different wrestler portray him.

Not only did it take a lot of the sting out of the punishment, but it lead to something else.

Sin Cara Is in a Confusing and Needlessly Complicated Feud

10 of 11

It lead to Sin Cara being in a feud that, for the first few weeks, was really hard to watch.

That was because for the first few weeks both men wore the same ring gear, so the fans were forced to rely on the announcers to tell us who was the "good" and the "evil" Sin Cara.  Finally, right before a pay-per-view they were given different ring gear.

However, if the other Sin Cara wants to steal the original Sin Cara's identity, why would he do that?  It helps the fans know which is which, but it doesn't help the storyline.

We also weren't given much back story on why the other Cara wanted to steal Sin Cara's identity.  The WWE could have used real life events to fuel an interesting story, but they didn't.

They also didn't let Hunico, the wrestler who had portrayed Sin Cara while the real Cara had been suspended, use his name.

Having a match with two men named Sin Cara is probably an announcer's worst nightmare.

Then again, it isn't any easier for the fans who have to watch it.

It's Time for the WWE to Throw in the Towel

11 of 11

Most fans hoped that Sin Cara would be the next big thing.

It's time for those fans, and the WWE, to admit that that just isn't going to happen.

It was admirable for them to try, and that doesn't mean that they should stop going after new and different stars from all over the world.  It just means that they shouldn't always expect, or try to force, success.

With that said, perhaps you disagree.

Or maybe you don't.

Let it be known in the comments below.

And as always, thanks for reading.
