On the Shadow Of a Pacman
Team Pacquiao's recent pronouncement of a possible retirement of the PACMAN after the latter's two remaining bouts past the December 6 showdown, I am caught up with this question... Will there be any other Filipino boxer to headline in Big bouts internationally?
No doubt that there arose new boxing talents who may hopefully bring the philippine flag in front of the world past the Pacman era. To mention; Nonito Donaire, Donie Nietes, and Gerry Penalosa. However, Nonitos' Lackluster performance in his defense against Mthalne has shifted my thought from positive to negative. There were media releases that pinpointed the boxer's LACK OF FOCUS on his training as the main reason he had such a hard time along the fight.
On the other hand, Donie Nietes is yet to be stage in a big fight. Though I believe personally that Nietes has real chance/s to wave a success of his own, i still have a doubt if if will be as international as the pacman's. Whereas, Gerry's chance of staging another BIG epic battle in an international arena seem to be ranning out because he has aged.
Until I was reminded about the PROMISE of a Rey "BOOMBOOM" Bautista.
Before BOOMBOOM suffered his first loss to Ponce de leon on Aug. 11, 2007 in a Brutal fashion, He used to be a star who was percieved to walk through the shadow of the Pacman. BOOMBOOM was admired everytime he knocked most of those who were pressumptous enough to came his way. And Perhaps, Many are just hyped up of what a Rey "BOOMBOOM" Bautista can achieve inside the boxing ring.
On a personal note, I too was hype up...of BOOMBOOM's power to knocked people out but never of his ability to boxed them out.
The very first time I and my grandfather saw Manny Pacquiao fought in blow by blow at 106 division, My grandfather foretold that Manny would go a long way in boxing. Perhaps, Manny's punching power was the ONLY driving force that made my grandfather conceive a positive vibration about the Pacman's career.
And maybe we all know the reason why, Manny was nothing but a punching machine who knocked out his opponent with sheer power without any boxing skills or whatsoever.
At this stage of BOOMBOOM's career, I could likened him to the old Manny Pacquiao during the start of his quest for boxing prominence. BOOMBOOM ain't got anythingelse but sheer power to lay his opponent down. He ain't got decent boxing skills; no arrogant boxing combinations, no explosive and elusive footwork, etc. That was further proven when he fought Heriberto Ruiz few weeks ago.
In that fight and all his other fights, BOOMBOOM seemed to know only one equation that is, ONE hard punch = Knocked out. He rarely threw even a one-two boxing combination. He never had side-stepping moves, Infact He only lay his head forward making him vulnerable for attacks.
To my belief, BOOMBOOM was never a good boxing student...BECAUSE There is NO good mentor to teach him.
If to many, BOOMBOOM is a promise unfulfilled, to me, he is a promise that is yet to be fulfilled. And Perhaps the very first step of the process is to take him out of his current camp and threw him in camp like that of the pacman's. It has always been my belief that a boxing lessons are learned from a good a boxing teacher. In the end, I hope that a good boxing camp can salvage Rey Bautista career.
