UFC 136 Fight Card: Stipe Miocic's Path Of Destruction

Sean SmithOct 6, 2011

Alistair Overeem has stolen the headlines, but in the long run Stipe Miocic could prove to be the better heavyweight signing for the UFC. Undefeated in six professional fights, the 29-year-old Miocic is a former NCAA wrestler and Golden Gloves champion with loads of potential.

At UFC 136, Miocic will make his UFC debut against the granite-chinned Joey Beltran.

Despite coming out on the losing end of lopsided fights against Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione, Beltran showed incredible toughness by taking those bouts to the scorecards.

Having finished all of his previous opponents before the end of the second round, Miocic will be looking to be the first fighter to stop Beltran inside the Octagon. When the unstoppable force meets the immovable object, something has to give.

Let's take a look at the six opponents who have already fallen at the hands of Miocic.

Corey Mullis

1 of 6

In February 2010, Stipe Miocic made his MMA debut against Corey Mullis in Cleveland. Showing off the power in his hands, Miocic put Mullis away in only 17 seconds.

As a nationally ranked wrestler at Cleveland State University, Miocic has the ability to stuff opponent's takedown attempts and make them pay with his heavy hands.

Paul Barry

A few months after quickly disposing of Corey Mulls, Stipe Miocic made a quick turnaround and took a fight against undefeated Paul Berry.

Coming off of three straight first-round finishes, it was Barry who was looking to receive some attention from major MMA organizations heading into this matchup.

However, Miocic once again went to work and finished his opponent before the midway point of the second round.

At this point, Miocic was beginning to show that the natural athleticism that had earned him looks from professional baseball teams during college could transfer over to MMA.

Jeremy Holm

3 of 6

In August 2010, Stipe Miocic returned to Cleveland for a bout against Jeremy Holm.

Less than two minutes into the contest, Miocic blasted Holm with a right hand.

Before Holm could recover, Miocic pounced and forced the referee to stop the fight.

With the victory, Miocic was given a step up in competition and a chance to prove himself as a legitimate heavyweight prospect.

Greg Maynard

4 of 6

In only the fourth fight of his career, Miocic was paired against Bellator veteran Greg Maynard in December 2010.

Maynard became the second fighter to survive the first round against Miocic, but he didn't make it much farther than that.

Less than two minutes into the second frame, Miocic overwhelmed Maynard for a technical knockout victory.

Another swift finish allowed Miocic to take another step up the ladder.

William Penn

5 of 6

Looking to earn a NAAFS title shot, Stipe Miocic faced off with William Penn in April 2011.

Much like his fight with Jeremy Holm, Miocic hurt his opponent with a straight right.

Despite being rocked, William Penn continued to press forward.

Eventually, Miocic found and opening and landed another right hand, though, which sent another Bellator veteran tumbling to the canvas.

Bobby Brents

6 of 6

With his impressive knockout of William Penn, Stipe Miocic earned a title fight with NAAFS heavyweight champion Bobby Brents.

Brents was 9-1 at the time and looking to have larger organizations take notice of his accomplishments.

As the second round came to an end, Miocic blasted Brents' lead leg with kicks, which caused the champion to submit due to the strikes. Miocic's time as NAAFS champion would be cut short, though, as the UFC came calling for the rising star.
